Schulte, school board ink contract
JANESVILLE Karen Schulte will earn a salary of $145,000 in her first full year as Janesville public schools superintendent.
Schulte and the board came to agreement on her two-year contract Tuesday.
Schulte's predecessor, Tom Evert, earned $139,500 in his final year on the job.
Evert also received a tax-sheltered annuity payment of $16,000. Schulte will receive a $5,000 annuity payment.
Evert got the use of a district-supplied car as part of his compensation. Schulte won't get a car but will receive $1,702 for in-district mileage each year.
Schulte also will get bonuses that are tied to her performance as measured by a leadership evaluation tool. The tool is part of the new Studer school-improvement process.
Schulte will get a $6,000 bonus at the end of her first year, the contract states. In the second year, depending on her performance, she could receive up to $10,000.

teachers are one of the professions that earns pathetically less than they deserve. that fact doesn't mean administrators should be paid poorly as well. many administrators are former educators. many teachers would be teachers regardless of the pay. that doesn't mean they shouldn't be paid well.

I'm sorry but 145,000 plus benefits is far too much for this position. In fact it is too much for any superintendent anywhere. The $100K a year our principals make it also too much. Cuts need to be made at the top why not start here? Giving a "new" administrator $6000 more than the last and the possibility of a $6,000-$10,000 bonus each year is complete crap. You people that sit here to defend her pay are the sames ones griping about teacher pay. In fact one of you did it on this blog. I highly doubt that "most" teachers don't deserve a raise. Just because your kid doesn't get it doesn't mean it is a teachers fault. Step up and be a parent that helps the situation rather than hinders it.
It wasn't too long ago ( a couple of months ) that there was an article about teacher pay and all the brilliant citizens of this city came out swinging. That's my tax money and I can't afford more even if is the building block of this city, country and even the world. To those of you that complained, have fun in a world with less education. Be happy giving administrators or CEO's, which is essentially what she is, even more! Teachers are what really make the system work not administrators. Administrators have a place just not making $145,000 a year!

cozat5...you could use a refresher course! I am not sure what most of your last post is about...what does "get a backbone and work for it instead of waiting for it" mean? and who was whining?

Is that the best you have BeloitGuy lol? My point i was trying to make is those teachers that deserve more money are the ones that teach to any student they have regardless of the students ability. If the style doesn't fit then find was that does. Don't just give up on them like so many of our teachers do. Off for now i won't get in a word match with those that whine because the other guy has more than they do. Get a backbone and work for it instead of waiting for it. Good luck in your knew position Karen.

Why is it that the public always criticizes teachers wanting more money when administrators get bigger raises than the teachers. Think about it. Isn't it odd that a new administrator ALWAYS gets more money than the person s/he replaces even though the new administrator as less or no experience? Where is the public outcry on that?

I found this interesting. I could not find the information for 2008 however Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster, was paid $109,169 in 2007. Additionally, Governor Doyle earned $136,263 in 2008 (information came from Milwaukee JS for those wanting a source). Seems odd our city superintendent will make more than these two.

Dude...One thing I learned in college (while I worked full time and raised two kids and kept my duties as a wife and friend) was to not get in a pissing match with a skunk - you'll never win. Unfortunately, I think you're wanting to 'right-fight' with me today and I won't do that. I'm not calling you a skunk, I just don't believe it would benefit for us to debate an issue you don't wish to understand.

Cozat - Do you think your child's inability to learn is only because of his/her teachers? I would venture a guess that those instructing your child know the difference between "write" and "right".....

Lets be real what has a superintendent done to deserve this kind of pay? Did they dodge bullets in the streets of baghdad or pull someone from a burning building in the bronx, have they done anything besides "pass a policy", or "over look a meeting" come on they should be on a 45,000 salary if that, teachers should be at about 35,000 to 40,000. Teachers work harder then superintendents, so how is the pay distro fair, can anyone explain that, maybe Happy2BAlive?

eetech...Let see #1 she is the head of the Janesville school system the leader so like any job structure out there she should make more. She's the head supervisor and supervisors make more than the people they supervise. #2 my daughter goes to public school and based off what she has learned IE: what they teach, sorry most (not all) of the teachers don't deserve a raise in my book. Meaning their job performance doesn't merit a raise. Example 3rd year Spanish student can't right or speak in a somewhat fluent nature but has a 3.5 grade average in that class. To me that says the teacher is not doing their job to busy discussing politics with the class. #3 Sports Coaches who are to worried about winning and giving the student that skips 75% of practices but yet they start and letters while the student, who isn't as gifted but gives it their all in every practice rides the bench. So no i have no feelings for those teachers but for the ones who do their job and always tries to perform up to the standards our kids deserve then yes Give them more by all means.

eetech...who's expecting teachers to take a pay cut? Who's complaining about how much a teacher makes? And when you say "she gets all this", you are aware that benefits are a MAIN reason educators stay in education when they could make more somewhere else aren't you? It's not the pay and it's definitely not the publics loving support! I don't think either make too little or too much. On average, pay needs be competetive across the country being careful to consider such things as cost to live in a community, etc. Janesville really is right where it needs to be in both teaching and adminsitrative categories - some won't agree but they should do their homework!
We've had great Superintendents in Janesville and we should get behind this one, show her some support, and watch where she takes education!

Out of curiosity: What exactly do you think a Superintendent does? The people who think a School District Superintendent makes "too" much money are the ones who think school, in general, is a waste of time. Re-read the posts of the complainers and tell me they should not have stayed in school a tad bit longer. I imagine they should have paid more attention to English and grammar. Perhaps they were expelled for not being able to follow the rules. Perhaps they are part of the very reason Administrators get paid the higher salaries...

I have just one question for those of you that will defend her: Why do you complain about the teachers and their wages when she get's all of this? Everyone expects the teachers to take pay cuts or not get increases but when it is an administrator no one whines. I will agree that it isn't her fault she is making that much. All superintendents make more than they should not just her.

The element of the little people that whine and complain " what about me, that's not fair" need to get off there butts and put their nose to the grind stone and quit being babies. Why complain about this woman and her pay? I mean apparently this person worked hard, and yes got some breaks, but she got herself there by her determination to go and get what she wants instead of laying around and crying about what she doesn't have. This you owe me mentality that is driving this country is what has it so messed up, Along with the handful of greedy crooks that like the whiners only care about themselves. Oh i personally do think her pay with the bonuses is a little high. Quit complaining and do something about your situation cause you won't get a hand out or any sympathy here.

dudefromjsvl...I hope they remove your post because it's offensive to women who work hard and EARN their way to management! How out of date and out of touch you are. If you want to be a CEO, go to college ($80,000), get a job to start paying your loans, go to graduate school($40,000), become a principal/department head and pay more of your loans, more school, longer hours, write your thesis, lead by example, work harder, then apply. IF, and only IF you're good enough, you will be chosen! Today's CEO - man or woman - does not need to bow to anyone or 'return favors' as you suggest! You need to be the BEST of the BEST and it is every bit as hard as it seems and then you're faced with putting up with people like you who will degrade the hard work you put in to get there! We'll have to agree to disagree because I don't think I can change your mind. I won't have the opportunity in my lifetime to achieve Ms. Schulte's status, but I'm not jealous of her of feel the need to bash her status publicly in an annonymous post!

What a joke. Everyone knew Karen was going to be the superintendent all along. They only said they were interviewing for legal sake. The school board wants to cut jobs and just like all other companies the little people are out cause they claim there is no money yet look at the salary Karen Schulte is getting plus bonuses. What a crock of crap. Funny how all the VP's and Directors and big wigs of companies manage to get their bonuses and salaries yet all the hourly employees are the ones who lose the jobs and get their pay cut! Someone needs to look out for the little people for once.
