BELOIT The Beloit Memorial High School Jazz Band is getting very close to reaching their fund raising goal in order to participate in an "invitation only" jazz festival in New York City.
The band is one of only 15 in North America attending this year's "Essentially Ellington" Jazz Festival. Band booster president, Michelle Shope, says an anonymous source said they would double their money if the band was able to meet a challenge. The band raised $5,000 and the donor increased the amount to $10,000.
The overall goal is to raise $25,000 for the trip, and the fund balance has reached $17,000.
The final two scheduled fund raisers are a swing dance this Friday night at the high school, and a benefit dinner and concert in downtown Beloit on Saturday. The band will also perform a "send off" concert at Eaton Chapel at Beloit College, May 3rd.
