Badgers rule third round
MADISON Four former University of Wisconsin Badgers were selected in the 2009 NFL Draft on Sunday.
Defensive lineman Matt Shaughnessy, linebacker DeAndre Levy, offensive lineman Kraig Urbik and tight end Travis Beckum were all third-round selections.
Shaughnessy was taken as the seventh pick in the third round (71st overall) by the Oakland Raiders.
Shaughnessy played in 50 career games for the Badgers and logged 108 solo tackles (173 total) and 14 quarterback sacks in four seasons.
DeAndre Levy, a three-year starter with the Badgers out of Milwaukee, was taken by the Detroit Lions as the 76th overall pick and the 12th selection in the third round.
Levy will join fellow Badgers, running back Brian Calhoun and linebacker Alex Lewis in Detroit.
An offensive lineman out of Hudson, Kraig Urbik, was taken as the 79th overall pick by the defending Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round.
Urbik was a 50-game starter on the Wisconsin offensive line and was an All-America and All-Big Ten selection as a senior.
Probably the most well known Badger in the 2009 Draft, tight end Travis Beckum from Milwaukee, was taken by the New York Giants as the 36th pick in the third round (100th overall selection).
The former linebacker turned tight end was an All-American in 2007 before breaking his leg during the 2008 season. Beckum had gambled his senior year by coming back.
Beckum left Wisconsin as not only one of the top tight ends in program history but also one of the schools most recognized receivers.
