One Janesville City Council member wants the city to take a closer look at its plans to build a new salt storage facility at the city services center.
Councilmember Tom McDonald says the council approved borrowing for the project because it was told a satellite location for the salt storage would be more cost-effective. He says the plans have now changed to put the storage at the city services center. McDonald wants the issue brought before the City Council at its next meeting.
John Whitcomb, city operations director, says while the city first thought a satellite salt storage facility would be a good idea, it might not work as well as a central location. He says when the city started looking at satellite sites and the number of routes served, the equipment and fuel pumps are at the city services center.
According to a memo from Whitcomb, in 2008 the City Council authorized borrowing $195,000 to build a satellite salt facility.
