WCLO's Steve Benton reports on tips budgeting money for back to school supplies, clothes, and extracurricular fees

RSS

— Family Living Educator for the Rock County UW-Extension, Angela Flickinger, says buying school supplies and clothing for children during tough economic times can be very challenging.

She says if your income is affected by a job loss or other factors, you need to be realistic with your budget.

Tips for saving money on supplies include taking advantage of sales, and using left over supplies from last year. When buying clothing, try garage sales or used clothing stores. And don't forget to figure in school fees when making out your budget.

Flickinger says as your children get older, school fees go up. Extracurricular activities and special clothing can also take a big chunk of your back to school budget.

Finally, Flickinger says check into free or reduced school lunches.
