— A Janesville counseling center will host a free support group for dislocated workers.

Individual screenings are taking place this week at Genesis Counseling Services, 1 S. Main St., Janesville, for people who want to participate in the eight-week session, counselor intern Michaela Voeck said.

The sessions start Wednesday, Feb. 11.

The group could help people who are feeling disconnected after losing their job, Voeck said.

"In some cases, employment is the only connection to community, to the world in general, that people have," Voeck said.

A support group for people who have been laid off seems like a natural fit for Janesville at this time, she said.

Voeck is working toward her master's degree in counseling at UW-Whitewater. She is not aware of a similar group in another community, she said.

Nationwide, counselors are seeing in increase in the number of people turning to things such as alcohol or gambling to deal with increased stress from the poor economy, Voeck said.

"They are needing healthy ways to cope with the stress," Voeck said.
