— The Janesville School District's interim superintendent wants to keep the job.

Karen Schulte said she hasn't applied yet, but she had intended to apply for the job even before being appointed to the interim post.

Schulte has been the district's director of student services since 2004. The school board appointed her interim superintendent Tuesday after it relieved Superintendent Tom Evert of his duties.

Board members cited communications problems with Evert.

The board was unanimous in choosing Schulte to fill in until July 1.

Board President DuWayne Severson said this morning that board members knew of Schulte's intentions when they appointed her. But he said the interim appointment gives Schulte neither an advantage nor a disadvantage in the selection process.

Schulte is not even assured of being one of the six finalists, Severson said.

Evert had intended to retire June 30. A search process has been under way, and finalists for the job were expected to be announced in March.

Severson said 14 people have applied for the job, and more applications are expected before the March 1 deadline.

Schulte's resume includes being assistant principal at Janesville's Marshall Middle School and Principal of Beloit Turner Middle School.

Schulte completed her doctorate in 2007.

Karen is the person that should be given this position as she is one that will get the job done and stand up for her reasons for change that is definately needed. If you don't know Karen you need to know her as you will not find a more dedicated person with a heart for students that is beyond IMO what her job as a teacher ever called for. She cares what happens to students and gives her all to seeing that they get what they need. SHE IS A KEEPER for this position.

Please Janesville; think outside of the box for once. I realize that there is something to be said for hiring local because they know the community etc, but if you always do what you've always done you'll continue to get what you've always had. Take this opportunity to wholesale out the administration and bring in some fresh ideas and not just more of the same broken programs!

Why isn't Tom Evert working at the ESC? He is being paid by the taxpayers. Other employees, when removed from their positions, have worked at various tasks at central office. I'm sure there is filing to be done, telephones to answer, supplies to be taken to buildings etc. None of these are inappropriate for him. He is still employed by the school district.

I feel very honored to know Karen, and am excited to hear this news. If this were an election, she would most certainly get my vote.
