— The Janesville City Council on Monday commended the retiring head of Janesville's leisure services department and its park supervisor.

Mike Williams worked for the city for 35 years, starting in 1973 as parks supervisor. He was named director in 1984.

Cliff Englert started with grounds maintenance in 1983 and was named parks supervisor in 1988.

"I've had the pleasure of working with 52 different council members in 35 years, and they have all supported the parks and recreation system," Williams told the council.

He singled out former City Manager Steve Sheiffer, who retired in September.

"During his tenure, we were able to accomplish a number of great projects in the community," Williams said. He noted the riverfront developments, the bike trail and the upgrade of many recreational facilities.

Williams thanked his co-workers and Janesville residents.

"I have come in contact with literally thousands of people serving on a variety of different committees, boards, friends' organizations and neighborhood groups, and the volunteer efforts to serve their community, to help make our city government work, is really outstanding," Williams said.

"I know that will continue in the future."

According to the council commendation, the park system nearly doubled in size during Williams' tenure, growing from 1,325 acres to 2,600 acres. Janesville has the largest park system per capita in Wisconsin, with 40.9 acres per 1,000 residents.

During that time, parks and recreation projects included Rockport Pool, the Youth Sports Complex, Palmer Park tennis courts, Paw Print Park, the construction of 15 park facilities, pavilions and maintenance buildings, the 26-mile paved bike system and Dawson Fields.

Englert, who served as Janesville's unofficial forester, said he hoped he's been able to advance the concept of the urban forest.

"I want to take this opportunity to thank the members of the council and the … citizens of Janesville for the opportunity to be involved in such a great organization," he said.

It was a pleasure to have worked for both of these professionals! Your love for the parks and recreation will be missed.

It's hard to imagine Janesville without all of these parks... especially some of the "older" ones (Palmer tennis courts, Dawson Fields, even Rockport).
.
Good on ya both and enjoy retirement!
