— Preliminary numbers indicate 2008 was a record-breaking year for fatal traffic crashes in Walworth County, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The county had no alcohol-related fatal crashes in 2008, down from two in 2007, five in 2006 and 14 in 2005, according to data Sgt. Mark Roum provided to The Janesville Gazette.

The county had four fatal crashes in 2008, down from 13 in 2007, 15 in 2006 and 29 in 2005, according to the data.

Roum said preliminary numbers also indicate a decrease in injury crashes in 2008. The state Department of Transportation has not yet compiled countywide numbers for 2007, but it reports 543 injury crashes countywide in 2006 and 588 injury crashes countywide in 2005.
