Adler resigns as Craig boys soccer coach
JANESVILLE Dave Adler has resigned as Janesville Craig High School’s boys soccer coach.
Adler was the Cougars’ head coach the last two seasons and was a volunteer assistant under Duan Damron in 2005 when Craig made its only WIAA state tournament appearance.
Adler also coached Janesville Parker’s boys soccer team from 1998 through 2002.
“I enjoyed coaching the kids and the support of the parents,” Adler said Sunday night. “Monte Phillips (Craig athletic director) was great, and Dr. (Mike) Kuehn (Craig principal) gave great support.’’
While Adler thanked the Craig administration for its support, he added he was frustrated by the lack of a paid assistant coach.
“It’s tough,” Adler said. “I’m raising two girls, and to me it’s not worth it (to coach) when you are dealing with things you can’t control.’’
Adler relied on the retired Damron as an unpaid assistant coach.
“One coach can’t be expected to run a Division 1 varsity soccer program on their own,” Adler wrote in an e-mail explaining his resignation to Craig players and parents. “A varsity assistant is a must.’’
Adler said he asked for a paid assistant, but said his requests were denied.
“Craig and Parker remain the only teams out of 10 in the Big Eight Conference that do not pay a varsity assistant,” Adler said in his e-mail.
Adler added that he was frustrated by the lack of support from Kevin Porter, the Janesville School District athletic director, but he would not get into specifics.
Adler has been teaching seventh grade at Franklin Middle School since 1998. He is a 1993 Middleton High School graduate and received his teaching degree from the University of Wisconsin.

I am very close to one of the programs in this city. It is a wonder how we (Janesville) could compete in the spring leagues and summer tournaments with Madison, Milwaukee, Rockford, etc. by winning leagues and placing very high in pretigous tournaments (2nd multiple times, 3rd, etc) and then do poor in the high school season. Both schools need a paid varsity head coach and a paid varsity assistant coach in order to compete. Too demanding of a workload for one person to handle all of the varsity responsibilities (schedule, coach, follow w/ bus and officials, fund raising, tournament director to gain funds, special events (parents night, senior night, etc). The facility upgrade was a major improvement, now keep it going with at least adequate staff.

Yes Fremont, I think you're a little confused on how the program really works.

Thanks coach Adler for your leadership and
taking the time and effort to continue to build
and share your coaching skills with our Janesville students. As a taxpaying citizen I
have appreciated observing your dedication to
the soccer program.

It would be nice to see a response from the athletic director. Soccer is not my favorite sport, but if you are going to have the program, run it right or get rid of it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...drop all sports from all schools.

Fremont - You obviously have very little knowledge of the way soccer works in this area, especially the Big Eight Conference. Parker, Craig and Beloit Memorial are light years behind the rest of the conference in respects to opportunities for players to develop outside of the school season. A soccer assistant coach would make no more than $2000 for a season. Why should a sport like football get 6 times as many assistant coaches when they usually have only twice as many athletes and far less games?

Soccer is not the only sport with that coaching situation. Baseball and Softball are in the same situation for sure

Isn't it funny how these coaches always find someone else to blame when "their" programs don't seem to go the way they would like. My first question is why apply for a Head Coaching job if you have "2 girls" you are raising and won't have the time. And how can you work for a district for as long as you have and not know that sometimes things are even out of an athletic directors control - i.e. budget cuts!

No paid assistant coach yet we added a co-op girls hockey team? What are the numbers of boys soccer players vs the girls hockey players at Craig?

Sounds like a serious issue that could affect the sports program. Unfortunatley the story does not include any comments by the District's Athletic Director.

Coach Adler is not the only coach in this district that feels like the District Athletic Director is of no help.
