JANESVILLE — The makeup days for those winter weather days off school are now set.

Janesville middle and high school students will make up a day on Thursday, Feb. 19. That day had been a day off for students, as is customary for parent-teacher conference week.

Elementary students will make up a day on Thursday, Feb. 26, also a parent-teacher conference day.

Kids still will get the Fridays of those weeks off, so they'll get a three-day weekend instead of four days off.

The Janesville Education Association had approved those makeup days earlier. Both the board and the teachers union had to agree because the school calendar is a part of the teachers' contract.

The JEA and board also agreed to Monday, April 13, as another weather makeup day. April 13 had been scheduled as the last day of spring break.

And both sides agreed that if yet another makeup day is needed this year, it would be on Friday, June 12.

As the calendar now stands, June 11 is the last day of the school year.

The district called off school four times this school year because of weather. The first one was built into the calendar. The next three had to be made up. One of the days was made up Friday.

Board member Greg Ardrey suggested that more snow days be built into the schedule when the new teacher contract is negotiated.

Board member Peggy Sheridan suggested the board give the administration authority to set makeup days in consultation with the union, although it wasn't clear whether the board could legally cede its authority.
