Cycles will thunder into Edgerton
If you go
What: Thunder Run, a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
When: Saturday. Motorcycle riders will leave Madison at noon, arrive in Edgerton at about 1 p.m. and leave at 2:30 or 3 p.m.
Where: Downtown Edgerton, near highways 51 and 59.
EDGERTON When hundreds of motorcycle riders roared into Edgerton two years ago, the community made them feel right at home.
So at home, in fact, that they want to come back again.
The 2009 Thunder Run, sponsored by Capital City Harley-Davidson and the Four Lakes Harley Owners Group, will return to Edgerton on Saturday.
Each year, Harley enthusiasts ride from Madison to a chosen destination and back as part of a weekend raising money for the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
It chose Edgerton as the destination for the first time in 2007.
"Edgerton two years ago just did such a great job of organizing it and making all the riders in the chapter feel welcome that they really wanted to come back," said Vicki Brown, a member of the Edgerton Area Chamber of Commerce and the Harley Owners Group. "It was really exciting to see a town that was just as excited about the cause as we were."
The chamber organizes entertainment and food for the riders and community members. This year, it's planning live music and a flea market in front of the Edgerton Depot, said Kim Schuetz, chamber vice president. Ten restaurants on Fulton and Swift streets will offer food and drink specials outside their businesses, and they will donate 10 percent of their proceeds to diabetes research.
Raffle tickets for a Harley will be on sale for $10 apiece.
The riders will leave Madison at noon and arrive in Edgerton at about 1 p.m., Brown said. They'll stay until 2:30 or 3 before heading back.
They'll arrive by County F from the south, heading north on Highway 51 to Fulton Street, where they will park their bikes. Organizers hope plenty of spectators show up to wave the cycles in.
About 700 bikers made the trip in 2007, but community members swelled the crowd to about 1,100, Schuetz said.
Besides raising money for a good cause, the event offers Edgerton a chance to market itself to a new audience, Schuetz said. Each rider will receive a goodie bag with coupons to Edgerton restaurants.
"When they go for a ride on a Sunday, they can (say), 'Remember that great sandwich we had in Edgerton?'" she said. "We want to give them a reason to come back to Edgerton."

i agree they were a good bunch, the trouble of giving up a couple of blocks downtown was worth it . it was also great to see how many businesses supported this and were happy to see them come .

Great bunch of well behaved bikers that were in Edgerton this afternoon. WTG Edgerton great job on welcoming them in. I bet they will be back again. Hope they raised the amount of money they wanted for diabetes.

curtaincall, I'm glad it's not Evansville as well. We in Edgerton are very happy that they have decided to stop here again.
As far as all the negative biker comments, GFY (good for you). There are a lot more loud cars and trucks on the road than bikes. 99% of people who ride motorcycles are great people.
curtaincall when was the last time you donated a entire Saturday, fuel costs and wear and tear on a vehicle for charity??? Also, check your spelling.....it sucks.
Just rode through Evansville yesterday and past a police officer, never got a second look.
Edgerton is a great town and has always been very welcoming to visitors.

iamqueenb, maybe you really need to go to edgerton and watch this, they are not loud and obnoxious, the most inconvenience is when they shut down the street for them to pull in and then leave again. i just dont think it s fair to label evansville as a motorcyle hating town.it takes alot of cooperation from the businesses to pull this off edgerton has the support of these businesses. its alright for evansville to say no to a rally, but there is no proof that they wouldnt of said no if it was a group other then motorcycles. alot of people dislike motorcycle riders , but in the last two years with gas prices rising there are alot more motorcycle riders appearing,it has nothing to do with anything other then gas prices.

etown-- evansville has never had them come in by the hundreds either. Thank goodness. I don't mind a few bikers but not in hoards. Really there is nothing in Evansville for them.. Unless you count the bars. Which oh yippeee bikers at the bars. Let them choose some where that has more to offer. Like Lake Geneva plenty of shops there. Evansville does not have squat for shops for people to shop. Evansville has failed to bring and keep anything in town that anyone would want to visit. The fund raising is a nice thing to do , however its not a green light to make a lot of noise and be obnoxious just because they are ' fund raising' Also when you are fund raising, your group is representing this charity, the charity does not want be representing it that causes trouble. Regardless of whom they are or what they are driving.

I see the word ignorant thrown around a lot. Ignorant means uneducated. I'm leaning towards stupid which means unintelligent or without reason. Many of you are treating a two hour or less stopover for lunch and a chance to stretch your legs like it's Sturgis or Daytona bike week. Read the article. A lot of you are acting like they're going to be drag racing up and down the main drag, peeing and puking all over the place when all they're doing is taking a rest stop. Unintelligent or without reason---Stupid. You all are missing the fact that they are doing it for charity. Way to go Bikers!!!!!!!!

my point pat is just because they said no once to an overnite rally doesnt mean bikers are unwelcome in evansville. so what they said no ,maybe the type of rally , over night camping or the amount of people attending had more to do with it then the fact they were riding motorcycles.they might of also been turned down if they would of been driving cars.i have went to many events in evansville and never seen anyone tell a motorcycle rider they are unwelcome in their town. the truth is towns would much rather deal with a short rally then an all nighter no matter who is sponsoring it. it takes alot of planning to pull off the longer rallies and have them go on without any problems then it does a short one. i was also working last year when this group came to edgerton , they were very nice people, and it was a fun event to watch.

No not all bikers are obnoxious as they have been described. My brother rides, but his bike is not load., as you pointed out louder does not mean safer and nothing has ever been proven to that point. He wears his safety gear, he is respectful to others on the road. We live on a major hwy and bikers that act as my brother does are few and far between. My neighbors have harleys and they are the most obnoxious loud bikers you will ever meet, even in their own drive way and you can hear them half way down the block. Biker's have given themselves this bad rap, and have only them selves to blame.

In addition, that doesn't mean they don't have their good side, doesn't mean they don't raise tons of money for charity, doesn't mean they don't work hard...they do all of that, too. But, it's hard too look past what is often the most obvious and often seen (and heard) part of them.

As a motorcylce rider myself, I for sure try not to stereotype "bikers". But, truth be told, too many, NOT ALL, but too many Harley riders do a bang-up job of stereotyping themselves...WAY too loud pipes (they don't really save lives), more time put in at the bar stool than in the saddle with a short little ride in between, loud, foul language, etc. They simply make a bad name for themselves and everyone who rides.

curtaincall i find your comments interesting , if they are so against bikers over there then why do they invite them to their anniversary party in august? i do know the police tend to try to stop motorcycles for anything just to check them, but i think in these times, any smart business owner would welcome any business at all. no matter if they ran, walked, drove a car, motorcycle or crawled in to their business as long as they had cash in their pockets when they got there

For part of a day they would not be so bad. They tend to bring more trouble than tourism though. Don't fool yourself. Their was a group camping in early June by the campgrounds by Milton, they left trash, a mess and truly thought camping meant peeing in the bushes with young kids around. They spent most of the weekend drinking and we had numerous complaints. My nieces company raised over 20.000 for MS and did not have to tolerate the noise or having people acting like they are entitled ..Consider yourself looking if they stay away from your town.

NOT ignorant comments quite the opposite. Biker's need to know they are not welcome every where they go. Some suggested this time of thing in Evansville a few years ago and it met with very strong resistance almost a NO way in hell type deal.

What a great event. It shows that we have the ability to cater to many different crowds. The same town that has a great book festival always attracts seven hundred plus bikers riding for a great cause. Nice to see the restaurants so involved as well.
We should have almost near perfect weather as well.
