The Janesville City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in City Hall, 18 N. Jackson St. An informal listening session with council members is scheduled at 6 p.m.

— The Janesville City council developed goals after a recent retreat and will consider adopting them at Monday’s meeting.

The goals are to:

-- Approve a budget that conserves reserve funds, limits property tax increases and continues major capital improvements. The council will evaluate strategies for debt and borrowing and developing budget process guidelines.

-- Assist with poverty, homelessness and job loss in the city.

-- Provide quality city services that are efficient, effective and need-responsive.

-- Initiate long-term economic/community development strategies for job growth. Do this by supporting the central business district, downtown/riverfront plans, public/private partnerships; continuing revitalization of central city neighborhoods; planning for new redevelopment projects such as the Monterey Hotel and parking structures, including buying property; looking for small/medium investment opportunities.

-- Start a facility maintenance and replacement program to address major capital/facility needs such as Fire Station No. 1, the transit facility, children’s museum, aquatics, Tallman House and the ice skating center.

There is nothing in these goals pertaining to sustainability issues (ie reducing energy costs, reducing waste, conservation of energy, etc.) Yet, last August (8/2008) the City Council initiated the Sustainability Janesville Committee (SJC). Did Councilman Perotto, a member of the SJC, represent these important interests to the other council members? Additionally, in May 2008 the City Council declared Janesville an "Eco-Municipality". This means we should be turning green with our sustainability practices. Where is the commitment?

And, they decided to support motherhood and apple pie. What a bunch of wishy washy goals.
