Fair's top five favorite foods cook up a cure for anyone's appetite

JANESVILLE Fair week for me is as much about the gyros as the blue ribbons.
My son must have a Billies Baked Potato, and my other son is partial to the mini donuts. A colleague gets a faraway look in her eyes when talking about the cheese curds.
Everyone seems to have his or her favorite food at the Rock County 4-H Fair.
To gauge the top five foods, we asked Maureen Fox-Rusch, advertising and concessions manager, which booths and tents haul in the most revenue.
From there, she suggested popular items that might draw crowds to those stands.
Not the most scientific results but here—drum roll please—are the five most popular foods along with commentary from Fox-Rusch:
The top five
-- Breakfast at the St. John Vianney Church tent. The church provides a varied menu of "American picnic fare." Its claim to fame? "They serve a full breakfast and breakfast sandwiches that keeps them very busy all morning." It opens at about 6:30 a.m.—long before any other vendors—and is a lifesaver for hungry 4-H'ers.
-- Malts at the Rock County Farm Bureau. "That's where fairgoers find their malts. 4-H fair kids will tell you they love their cheeseburgers, -- Corn dogs at McKinney's. The food trailer sells corn dogs and funnel cakes. "If you talk to people, what they look forward to is the really big corn dogs. And funnel cakes are always good at the fair."
-- Cheese curds at the Rock County Dairy Promotion trailer. "Their cheese curds, there's the big hit. If you go to a restaurant, you want something to dip them in. There, you don't need anything." 4-H'ers especially appreciate the free ice cream cone coupon they get in their premium books.
-- Gyros at the Greek Garden. "At the fair office, we love the gyros. That's what we look forward to. There's no other like it. They're so messy, you gotta find somewhere to sit. To just sit and not talk to anyone."
Near the top
Fair office personnel also volunteered honorable mentions:
-- Pork Place's pork chop and pulled pork sandwich, provided by Dave Wheeler of Janesville.
-- Billies Baked Potatoes.
-- Mini donuts at the Donut Family.
-- And what would the fair be without a cream puff or éclair?
New this year
What's new this year?
Gourmet cookies at Emma's Cookie Kitchen and Mexican fare at Salvador's Wagon of Beloit. "I know he has fantastic nachos," Fox-Rusch said.

I always wanted to live in a Taco Bell. I wonder if the code department or the city council would rezone the empty one on Milton to residential.

Economy takes bite out of restaurant tally
"A research report ... shows that there are 4,000 fewer restaurants in the United States this spring compared to the same period last year."

.
It's not just Del Taco. That said, I like the idea of a Greek deli with the lamb on a spit (a Chicago invention, by the way). And Greek restaurants are apparently thriving despite the downturn.

I had the frozen cheesecake dipped on chocolate on a stick yesterday. It was good for about the first 3/4, then I was getting tired of it. I think it was a little bit too big. If two people shared it, it would be perfect!
Today it is a gyro for dinner. Had my first one two years ago and was hooked.

I miss rollin pin...... My mom used to take me in there all the time when I was a kid and they always had a free fresh cookie to give you. Thats one of the many customer service things that have fallen by the wayside over the years. I did just see in the paper that they will be having a sale out on hwy 14 this weekend though so I guess I can still get my fair week cream puff fix!!

I mentioned the Del Taco building because that or the old Taco Bell would be good spots for a Gyro joint. WE NEED ONE. Who wants to go into business??

I'm a big fan of the eclairs and cream puffs, cheese curds, corn dogs, lemonade, funnel cake, curly fries and mini donuts.
Those are favorites from over the years
Not a big fan of the prices, though.

The Brodhead UCC has a food tent there where they serve (I think) the only and the most delectable fruit~in~a~cup. They also have a breakfast burrito, (awesome) biscuits & gravy, (really good) and cinnamon buns, (excellent warmed). They have other food, but I haven't had time to try it all ~ yet. Check them out!

The best place I've been to so far for gyros is in Whitewater at Day n Nite Cafe on Main St. Really good priced too ( Plus they have a "Day N Nite Burger" which has gyro meat on top of a burger) mmmmm.....

The Greek restaurant was on Center Ave just south of St. Peters Church. The little car lot now. Yes, the food was good...but the conditions were rather gross. Big 10 Subs had great gyros. Did I hear someone say the old Del Taco building? Am I missing something? Didn't like that place anyway.

Fair food MMMMM already have had some cheese curds, malt, burgers and chicken strips & curly fries. Tomorrow more goodies, eclair (to take home) and probably a gondola or maybe the crab ragoon combo.
*
The food is the only perk with having to be at the fair 15 hours everyday. Only downfall is Monday I will need to start a diet to get rid of all of the extra weight I will have put on from the 6 days of fair foods....MMMM but it is all worth it.

I miss the eclairs and cream puffs that Bob Hiller used to serve with his Rollin Pin Bakery. I think the 4H fair committee dropped the ball when they lost him.
Just my opinion.

While I always support the Optimists, the photo of the curds from the Dairy Promotion trailer sure look a lot more tasty than the frozen lumps they've been offering the past few years. If they really want to make some money, they should learn how the Monroe Optimists make theirs!

mikki- use to be Athens, or Hilltop (bar downtown Jnsvll). Both gone now.
Heard 5 points have good gyros, but don't think I'd go there for them.
Milton Family Restaurant does pretty good as I've found out lately. Not off the spit though.
I've seen ads for gyros at the lunchbox in Milton too, but haven't tried one yet.
Think I'll go to the fair and get a boatload this weekend! They look GREAT!!

No and that would be a great idea for someone looking to fill either the old Taco Bell or Del Taco buildings. Many years ago there was a Gyro place on Center Ave. I think it's Lisa's now. Anyoo. I just remember it was really dirty and there were flies all over the meat while it was roasting on the spicket. YUK. I'm still craving a big fat Gyro though.

I hope everyone get a chance to stop at the Optimist cheese curds and chicken nugget stand. This wonderful group work very hard to earn money they can use to support the youth in our area. This is their biggest fund raiser and all money earned goes to support kids.
