WCLO's Steve Benton reports a pilot program, stressing "same gender" classrooms in Beloit, is expanding.
BELOIT A "same gender" classroom initiative at a Beloit elementary school is expanding from one to three grade levels next year.
Robinson principal, Sam Carter, says the pilot program included only fourth grade students this year. It will include third and fifth grade students next year.
Carter says there should be enough data after next year to gauge the effectiveness of the program. He says preliminary data shows only kindergartners at the school were better disciplined than the fourth grade students. Achievement data will not be available until after completion of the third year of the study.

Is effectiveness the only standard we use? What if it were discovered that same race classrooms (whatever that means) were more effective would that justify their use? And, one must ask if effectiveness even is defined by maximum discipline -- i.e. passivity of the children.
