Local college athletes are being held up as role models in the fight against underage alcohol abuse.

UW-Whitewater Assistant Athletic Director Amy Edmonds admits student athletes haven't always been perceived as having the most studious attitude. That may be one reason why using student athletes in the classroom , may be a good way to curb irresponsible drinking. The practice helps integrate athletes into alcohol abuse prevention programs for the entire student body. Edmonds says the student athletes present the program, right beside teachers in the classroom. The athletes are also featured on posters, public service announcements, and train as peer mentors.

The program has met with such success, it's been feature in a National Collegiate Athletic Association publication.
