Republicans asking 'Where are the jobs?'

In this Feb. 13, 2009 file photo, House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, talks with reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington.

— Republicans concerned about the Obama administration's big spending on economic stimulus, energy and health care are asking, "Where are the jobs?"

"The president and Democrats in Congress claim this spending binge is necessary to put Americans back to work," House Republican leader John Boehner said Saturday in the Republican radio and Internet address. "They promised unemployment would not rise above 8 percent if their trillion-dollar stimulus was passed.

"But our nation has lost nearly 3 million jobs this year. Unemployment has soared above 9 percent. And now the president admits that unemployment will soon reach double digits.

"After all of this spending, after all of this borrowing from China, the Middle East, our children and our grandchildren, where are the jobs?" Boehner said.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said early this week that the president expects the nation will reach 10 percent unemployment within the next few months. In January, President Barack Obama's economic team predicted unemployment would rise no higher than 8 percent with the help of $787 billion in new government spending. The unemployment rate in May reached a 25-year high of 9.4 percent. Obama aides have said that the economy took a turn for the worse since their initial forecast.

Boehner has seized on the administration's revised forecast.

He predicted Democratic proposals on health care, stimulus and energy would all be bad for the economy.

He said Republicans have proposed improvements to health care and economic stimulus that are less intrusive and expensive than Obama's plans. And he criticized Democratic efforts to pass an energy bill that he described as "a national energy tax," which passed the House Friday. He singled out proposed health care changes as a job killer.

"It's about to get worse for middle-class families and small businesses," he said. "Democrats are pushing a government takeover of our health care system that will cost at least a trillion dollars."

"The president has repeatedly claimed that Americans will be able to keep their doctors under the Democrats' plan," Boehner said, adding he's seen government reports that indicate millions will lose their current health coverage and millions more will lose their jobs if the Democratic plan is adopted.

Obama argues that health care changes will help the economy and scoffs at predictions that his plans to offer a public plan as an alternative will harm the private insurance industry. He says it's not logical that private industry provides the best quality health care but can't compete with a public plan.

Boehner said Democrats should abandon their determination to pass measures without GOP cooperation. "We hope our Democrat colleagues will abandon their failed go-it-alone approach and work with us to make these reforms a reality," he said.

MooShoo: Apology accepted. Now, were you pointing a finger at ME when you were saying "your policies?" Just what do you think my policies are, or were you talking "republican" policies? I am not necessarily a republican. Used to be. I'm more of a libertarian now, if you must lump me into some sort of stereotype. But I do agree with some of what the republicans stand for, yet today. I hope you know what I mean....there are still some cobwebs from the flights back - but I did manage to find some coffee just now, and that is seeming to help...besides being delicious.

darwin1: I'm glad that you see the sense in term limits, but I hope that the above statement was not said in the pejorative sense. Sure, we in the military are employed by the government, but I hope you don't see that as welfare. People on welfare are getting a handout, for sure, but they also don't have to put their lives at risk in order to benefit nor live a conditional life partially devoid of freedom of choice and action. Please explain further what you mean, exactly. If it's just an attempt to stereotype republicans, I think you can do a better job than that without vilifying those in the service. I think you'd be surprised how many in the service are not republicans. The public perception that most in the military ARE republicans is an absolute myth.

Limbaugh does make some good points, but you have to realize, based on previous posts that I have made, that my politics and his are two different things. O'Reilly is just a loud-mouth idiot that irritates me just to listen to him.

Officer, it's good to be back, and we will indeed have to get together for those fermented malt beverages. Give me a day or two, as I am REALLY screwed up right now due to my world literally being turned upside down. I was awake when you guys were sleeping. My body wants to continue that, but of course that is not happening. I slept half of today, during the day... sucks. Thanks also to ncpanfan. I'm home until the the 13th, then back to Afghanistan for six more months, and of course, to be screwed up again for another couple of days.....not looking forward to it for more than one reason.

On the way home, one of the guys travelling with me was a friend of the kid from Peshtigo and 1SG Blair, who died last Tuesday in an attack between Bagram and Kabul. He's going to be pretty sad that he died afterall. They were hoping he'd be fine. We talked about it at length while waiting for the bus to Kuwait Intl. Afghanistan sucks.

The republican's need to look in the mirror just as much as the democrats do! When are people going to get over themselves and pull their heads out of their rear ends and start leading again??? We as citizens, can sit here all day and point fingers with these misguided, dishonest political barbing fools, or we can unite and actually prove to them we don't need their useless redirect because we're actually capable of thinking for ourselves! MAN creates jobs. The govt's job isn't to invent their own form of free enterprise! There's such a wealth of opportunity out there for people I can't even do it justice by trying to explain it! We have the internet and we have a "global economy"... put those two factors together and think about that for a second! The internet allows EVERYONE to be anywhere in the world at the click of a button. The money is out there for the taking if you're willing to step out and think the opposite of the media fed drones that are ignoring the new rules of the economy! I spent a few years at GM listening to many people down there that just couldn't wait to offer me their expert advice. Good thing I didn't listen.... I was blessed enough to adapt to change while many of those same people are dying with their lack or inability to CHANGE!

I agree with DiGriz that senators and representatives need term limits like the President. However, I believe it would have to be a part of an amendment to the Constitution and I am not sure Congress will do that anytime soon.

I guess I would like to hear John B explain how he might stimulate job growth other than the usual cutting taxes mantra.

Conservatives like government jobs also. They just prefer them to be the military / homeland security types of jobs that employ conservatives. One in three jobs in Alaska, for example, are tied to the Federal government yet Alaska is generally a Republican state. This is an example of welfare Republicans which includes ranchers, logging and energy companies which use public lands as well as media companies which use the public airwaves. In essence, Rush Limbaugh's money has been made via the welfare of the public airwaves. Anyone in the military is a recipient of the public's welfare and tax dollars.

Digriz, your back! You are correct, economics does not take a political persuasion. Applications of economic tools as a matter of fiscal or monitary policy have their political followers. I would say Republicans favor supply side (tinkle down) macroeconomics, flat tax, and aversion to taxing wealth as three things that come to mind.

That all being said, it is a straw man argument to say your policies are better than the ones in play. Like I said before, when Rep. Stupid is in the majority, perhaps he gets to insert a page in the playbook.

Am I the only one who doesn't give a rat's butt about keeping my doctor? Why is that a concern? Have people lost the ability to take care of themselves? I'm willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to halve our health care spending. Mr. Bohner states "We hope our Democrat colleagues will abandon their failed go-it-alone approach and work with us to make these reforms a reality,"." I really don't see either side willing to meet in the middle. It is becoming the norm to critize or belittle other opinions. Not all democrat or all republican policies or ideas are bad. Nor does one party have all good ideas. I don't care if you are a liberal or conservative, until our elected officials can think for themselves and not what a party chairman wants them to think, we will not have a government for the people.

funny that in June the unemployment rate jumps. I remember Hannity & Limbaugh crying about the democrats false claim of a recession by using the unemployment rate in June because all the College Grads. are counted on that so the numbers were simpy exaggerated.
.
That said, things aren't moving as quickly as anyone wants and that isn't good. The stimulus did not do what it was intended to do, YET!
.
I agree with Mit Rommney that by the end of the year the economy will improve. Republicans will continue to claim the stimulus was not needed the Democrats will claim it took longer than they wanted but the stimulus worked.
.
I believe the stimulus was needed, the economy would be worse without it but it hasn't done what President Obama said it would do.

I've been saying since the start of this so called stimulus that it is a scam, sham and a farce. The amount of money wasted is criminal. The jobs created are completely temporary and centered around infrastructure construction. So for our area that means you keep your job for a while if you work at Lycon, Bjoin, JP Cullen and related businesses. The rest of us are going to be left holding the tax bill with nothing to show for it but a meager $400 off payroll. If that 700 plus Billion was divided between the 300 million Americans it would have amounted to a little over $2500 each that could have directly impacted each family, city and state according to the population. Instead we have pork spending and pet projects that do nothing to but move an agenda.

Who approved the first TARP disbersements, with no oversight, accountability, and virtually nothing to show for it? I'll give you a hint, his name rhymes with forge mush.

Health care? Wow, we have big problems there. I'm still trying to figure out what the Repubs did while Bush was in office...oh that's right, nothing. Status quo, don't rock the boat, the "fundamentals of the economy are fine", drill, baby drill, the rich shall inherit everything, welcome to the machine.

"Where are the jobs? Just look at China and you will know the answer. How do you think China gets all that money they lend to the United States? The money comes from us buying goods that were once made in the United States.

The sad thing we are funding the global domination of a communist country by letting big business send American jobs there. Big business's greed is destroying America and our government is letting them do it!"

This process has been going on for at least 30 years. How long will it be until the average American wakes up and figures this out? Will our government and the American public allow this destruction to continue until the US achieves third world status?

"It is anticipated that job creation or preservation will be 600,000"

"creation or preservation", is this the same as the new democratic spin of "create or save"; where are the metrics used to compute save or preservation of a job? If the "increased" spending creates 600,000 jobs per month, as you say, it will still be an aggregate negative job loss every month based on current numbers.

Have the voters learned yet that massive govt spending and borrowing is not the answer?

"Don't get your undies in a bunch yet."

In other words...keep you belief in the Administration and their revised forecasts; don't actually look at the current results of their actions.

Don't get your undies in a bunch yet. The jobs were to be funded over the summer. I believe that the summer just started about a week ago. Stimulus spending will be accelerated over the next three months. It is anticipated that job creation or preservation will be 600,000 in that period--roughly four-times the jobs created/preserved in the previous three-month period.
