$2.3 million grant to help displaced autoworkers in Rock County
The second installment of a federal grant to displaced workers is announced this week.
The National Emergency Grant Program provides assistance to states when they have a sudden need. Now $2.3 million in assistance is available for Rock County workers impacted by auto industry layoffs. Those include workers at General Motors, Lear, LSI and United Industries. The majority of the project is designated toward retraining. The services are provided through the Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board and the Rock County Job Center.

It's great, but I'm a little disappointed that it is restricted (again) for only people laid off from those employers and not anyone affected by the economic downturn. My position ws eliminated due to the economy, but I didn't work for GM, Lear, etc, therefore, I don't qualify for Badger Care Plus health benefits, extended unemployment compensation or certain retraining benefits. It has been explained to me that this is not a program of entitlement. Can someone help me understand why the Feds/State favors certain laid off workers more than others?
