Delavan postpones park and recreation decision
DELAVAN The park and recreation conversation will keep going in the city of Delavan.
During a special meeting Monday night, the city council voted to schedule a joint meeting July 13 with the parks and recreation commission.
The council’s intent is for the two groups to meet with Geneva Lakes YMCA Executive Director Joe Peyer.
The time is right for Delavan to look at the arrangement of its departments, since the city doesn’t have a full-time parks and recreation director, council member Dave Kilkenny told the Gazette after the meeting.
At a June 16 meeting of the council and the commission, Peyer suggested Delavan contract with the Geneva Lakes YMCA to run Delavan’s recreation department.
Under his plan, Peyer would work as the recreation director. If the city contracted with the YMCA, Peyer said he would hire a full-time recreation supervisor to work in the city.
Peyer proposed he oversee Delavan’s parks and recreation divisions.
The commission prefers to hire one full-time director for the two departments, commission Vice Chairman Al Buchholz said.
The commission also was not comfortable with Peyer’s demand that a decision be made in July, Buchholz said.
The city took applications through June 22 for a new director.
About 35 people applied for the job, but the interviewing process is on hold, Buchholz said.

I thought Peyer presented his "I am taking my pail and shovel and going home" resignation last week, so why would the Council be meeting with him?
