— Why do basketball coaches make players shoot free throws at the end of practice when they’re dead tired?

Ask the Elkhorn High boys basketball team.

The ninth-ranked Elks fought valiantly in a 66-62, double-overtime loss to Beloit Memorial in the WIAA Division 1 sectional title game here Saturday night before 2,322 screaming fans, but they couldn’t overcome 15 missed free throws in regulation.

As a result, Beloit (18-5) advances to the state tournament for the first time since 2005 and plays unbeaten Bay Port (23-0) in Thursday night’s last quarterfinal game at 8:35 at the Kohl Center in Madison.

The Elks’ magical season ended at 20-3, but could’ve continued with the school’s first state appearance since 1987 had it not been for the missed free throws and a controversial call at the end of the first overtime. Elkhorn’s Jake Gahart made a jumper as time expired in the first overtime to send the Thundering Herd faithful streaming onto the court, but the trailing referee ruled Gahart got the shot off a split-second too late.

“I thought we had the game won right there,” Elkhorn’s Eric Bryson said. “We all thought it was before the buzzer sounded, but that’s not how the refs saw it.”

After Elkhorn took its last lead at 60-58 on two Bryson free throws with 1:29 left in the second overtime, the Purple Knights responded with a 7-0 run to put the game away. K.J. Evans, who led all scorers with 22 points, tied the game at 60-60 with two free throws, and Sharod Stone followed with the biggest basket of the game to give Beloit a 62-60 lead with 46 seconds left.

“We gutted it out, and did what we had to do to win the game,” Evans said.

“Elkhorn could shoot the lights out, so we had to really dig down defensively, and we did when we had to.”

Both teams had a chance to win the game in regulation. Bryson’s lay-up tied the game at 51-51 with 34 seconds left, and it stayed that way after Beloit’s Terrell Parks missed a baseline jumper with two seconds left.

Elkhorn was 7-for-22 from the free-throw line in regulation, including 1-of-6 in the first quarter and 4-of-10 in the fourth.

Elks coach John Handel said free throws have been a sore spot for his team all season, but he wasn’t making excuses afterward.

“Everybody’s told these kids they’re not very good and they can’t compete with teams in the Big Eight because of the conference we play in,” Handel said. “But we knew we’d come in here and give them a war.

“The effort was awesome. These guys have had two great years, and they proved tonight that they can play with the big boys.”

Foul trouble plagued both teams, but the Elks felt it worse. Four starters fouled out for the Elks, including Max Findreng and Lisle Blackbourn in regulation.

Bryson led the Elks with 18 points before fouling out, and Findreng scored 14.

Stone added 11 points to the winning cause, including a half-court heave at the halftime buzzer that gave the Knights a 30-24 lead.

But that was just the start of the drama in sectional final to remember.

BELOIT 66, ELKHORN 62 (20T)

Beloit (66)—Stone, 3-4-11; Young, 2-1-5; Evans, 9-4-22; Smith, 2-2-8; Davis, 2-4-8; Parks, 3-3-9; Sims, 0-3-3. Totals: 21-21-66.

Elkhorn (62)—Gahart, 3-1-8; Bryson, 5-6-18; Lockhart, 2-0-5; Findreng, 5-2-14; O’Laughlin, 5-1-11; Blackbourn, 2-0-4; Schmidt, 0-2-2. Totals: 22-12-62.

elkhornfan13...the tape showing .4 does NOT exist. getinvoved is correct (IMO) that the Beloit players pulled off a big win to get to state...wouldn't you be a little excited? And yes, they did line up and watched the elks get their medal. All of this "they did this...they did that" is kinda dumb. Remember...this all started with miltonalum claiming he had a video...and now he is no where to be seen. That speaks volumes! Good luck Knights!

elkhornfan13: The Beloit players just won a tough double overtime game to get them to state...should they not be excited? And if I do recall the Beloit players did line up and watch the elkhorn players receive their medals. Did some of them high-five eachother while in line? Probably, but I don't think that is such a big deal. To say they completely ignored them is an exaggeration.

I am really waiting on this video....I'm beginning to think it might not actually be there. Also. about the refs...I agree that there are many great refs in this area. However, they were not there that night. Many refs just get their reffing liscense these days for extra money. It seems that they don't truly care what the outcome of the game is. With the sportsmanship of the kids, it is agreeable that the elkhorn fans may have been kind of rude with the newspapers, but should not be taken personally. The rude part on Beloit's behalf was when the Beloit players were all high-fiving eachother and cheering for themselve while completely ignoring the Elkhorn fans receiving their medals.

I agree whistleblower there are many good refs in this area, sadly none of them called that sectional final. Maybe they had an off day, they are human. And I've seen refs call 3 seconds all the time when they've been camped in the lane for 3 seconds. Also when a coach leaves the coaching box, as well as his assistant coach, doesn't that result in a technical foul? I know coach Larson for Badger got T'd up when he left the coach's box but the Beloit coach was out of the box several times in the sectional final and not so much as a warning. I don't care about how it effected the game but I'm just wondering why they call it in some games and not in others.

I wish I could have seen the game that everyone is ranting and raving about..But I couldn't. Sounds like no one likes the job the refs done. My question is: did the refs miss 14 out of 20 freethrows? Did they travel or double dribble, or even park in the lane. And by the way, who calls 3 seconds anymore anyway.. Give 'em at least 4 seconds. The fans are there to see a game, not officials work. Before anyone bad mouths officials, there are a lot of VERY good officials right here in our area.. These guys are also fathers, husbands, brothers, and to some of you, friends.. Really people, it's a game, not life or death..Chill....

To KJ, Jahlil, and the rest of the BMHS team....I am very proud of you, I wish you all the luck this week. I've been watching most of you boys since 3rd grade at the Boys Club and you have been playing your hearts out since. You deserve this. Tremaine sends his love to you all, and said do it for him! When it comes to these games, parents and staff get heated and hard headed. Remember that when the day is over, it is a game. Do your best. Be a team. Show respect to the other players and the refs; more importantly to eachother. Keep your heads up high, that's where they belong! I'm soooooo proud of you!

elksbballfan...just curious, were you at the game? Your last post says how the Elkhorn fans had great sportsmanship, and implying that Beloit fans did not. Who displayed better sportsmanship when the players were introduced? Elkhorn students when they had out their newspapers...or Beloit students that just stood their when the Elks were introduced? At halftime when Beloit cheerleaders were preforming a cheer and in the middle of it, Elkhorn students started clapping...until one of their school supervisors told them to stop...was that good sportsmanship? Again, these are not big deals because it happens...but don't write how Beloit fans were rude...like getinvolved said, it goes both ways between the student sections. Again...both schools were well represented on Saturday.

Now who do you say is defensive? Re-read your post! Yes, plenty of Beloit fans applauded when Elkhorn received their medals...but I didn't notice many Elks applauding when Beloit received theirs. (Yes, I know its easier to applaud when you win) And yes, BOTH teams have passion and sportsmanship...not just Elkhorn. Many things get yelled at games in the heat of the moment...right or wrong...it happens. Yes, Elkhorn probably played a better game then Beloit expected...so good game. We will never agree on many of the issues discussed here. Fans tend to see things through the eyes of their own team.

elksballfan: are you serious? Did you not see the entire Beloit adult section standing and clapping while the Elkhorn players received their medals? I did because I was there! There was plenty of support for those players. Elkhorn played great and they should be congratulated. Are you going to tell me that there was only trash talk moving one way between the student sections? I'm sure there was plenty going both ways - it doesn't make it right but don't try to classify all Beloit fans as bad because of a few, I'm sure not all Elkhorn fans were class acts. It was a great game and both teams played with passion and sportsmanship - no one is trying to deny Elkhorn players any respect, they earned everyone's respect with their play on the floor.

Passion and sportsmanship? Yes, definitely, by the Elkhorn Elks! Did the Elkhorn players receive any applause as they were receiving their medals? Elkhorn students were told to sit down and shut up by Beloit fans on the Elkhorn bleachers. I haven't seen any Beloit fans congratulating the Elks on a game well-played. Just because someone says they have a video means our players and fans deserve to be called whiners and not given the respect that they deserve? Wow, Beloit, give it a rest! Why so defensive? Were you surprised that you had such a tough time with Elkhorn? The Elks are winners in our eyes and that's all that matters.

Try these facts! 1.This all started with miltonalum claims he has video proof that there was .4 seconds left on the clock when the guy shot. He was going to put the video on youtube, but I wonder why he hasn't...maybe because it is not true. (I have seen the tape, and Elkhorn coaches seem to think it's too close to call) 2. It was the opinion of some Beloit fans that the gazette usually reports stories about Beloit a bit "negative. And finally, you could say Beloit also played with passion and sportsmanship...and now on to STATE!

Fact #1--most of the comments are not even initiated by Elkhorn fans--the real whiners are the Beloit fans
Fact #2--there are many refs out there who need to take a refresher course
Fact #3--This has nothing to do with Beloit or its team--they didn't make the call--we all know who did--we all have a right to our opinion--both teams played their heart out and it is too bad it had to end on a controversial
issue
Fact #4--The Elks played with passion and sportsmanship--they will always be #1--THANKS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON ELKS--YOU ARE THE BEST!!!

First, I did not officiate the game. Second, I was there as a neutral observer. Third, the comment "the pic of 11 of elkhorn being defended in the photo gallery is par for the course for the night. If you clean it up early, it won't happen late, nor will there be 50 fouls," is amusing. One team was in bonus before the first quarter was over. I guess calling it early didn't stop the fouling.
Fourth, I am an official, so yes I am sticking up for them. Hardest, most thankless job there is, but we do it because we like the game and most importantly we like the kids. Pick a whistle up one time and your attitude will change quickly.

Great bantering back and forth. The video will be fun to see. I think the article is about Elkhorn because they weren't picked versus Verona or Beloit and ended up out playing Verona, and outworked and outcoached Beloit. Beloit narrowly squeaked by Badger, Tremper, and Elkhorn when they should have beat all of them by 15+. The last foul on 15 for Elkhorn was a no doubt charge as Evan's was out of control and 15 was set. That was a game changing call especially when he had 4 already. Calling 50 fouls in a Sectional Championship game with two terrific teams is too bad because you don't end up letting the kids win the game and the refs become a distraction. Good luck Beloit.

All of you are rediculous. THE REFS! THE REFS! THE REFS! Quit blaming these three guys. They did a terrific job. These three individuals are State Tournament Officials. They called a fair, consistent game. Most of you were complaining that they called it tight, but if they didn't, then you would complain they didn't call enough. God forbid if they missed a call from THEIR angle. Please remember most of you were sitting in the stands (which usually makes it easy to complain) and do not have the knowlege that those three individuals have. Beloit fans were complaining for "over the back" fouls on #15. There is no such thing as "over the back." Read a rule book and then complain. Had Beloit boxed out one time, they may have gotten a "push" foul called on the rebound. I didn't see one boxout all night. Elkhorn fans were complaining that their guards weren't drawing fouls when they drove to the basket. When your player drives in pulls some loopty loop stuff out of nowhere and flies into the defense, it's a no call. When the dribbler leans in to the defense, it's a no call, or player control on the dribbler. SO BEFORE YOU BLAME OFFICIALS OR SCREAM AND YELL AT THEM, DO US ALL A FAVOR AND PICK ONE OF TWO THINGS:
1. Read a rule book so the stuff you spew out of your mouth isn't insulting to the game, or
2. Get certified and officiate. (Most of you couldn't do a jr. high game)

Great game both teams. Good luck at state!

Laughing at the guy that said the refs were on Elkhorns side. Are you joking! Beloits big's camped in the paint all night long and were called once for 3 seconds, not to mention the consistant non calls on hand checks. It was the same way when Beloit played Badger. The refs calls were for sure in favor of the Purple Knights. As for the shot it could have gone either way and at this point video evidence doesn't matter the games over. Congrats to both teams on a good game and good luck to Beloit at state.

Do we really need video to prove a high school game. It is used in the pros and college way too much. Even if the refs were bad, it is still their call. We try to teach our children to respect the authority, yet we can't ourselves. Respect and leave it. I've been burned many times by a refs call, yet still go on in life. My son just got burned yesterday, yet he got up in a good mood knowing he did his best. That is whats important.

You have to remember in 1.9 seconds, the ball was inbounded, the first guy put up the shot, it was blocked, the second guy from Elkhorn got the rebound and shot. (And also, just before that play it shows Elkhorn's #15 all over one of Beloit's guys...but no foul called) I would agree...the officials were bad. I think I read 50 fouls called?
