WHITEWATER Paulette "Peppy" Hopkins seems to have found a medical treatment that works.
A stem cell treatment a few years ago replaced the blood-producing cells in her bone marrow destroyed by chemotherapy, and her blood counts are up to the "adequate" range.
Hopkins, 52, was diagnosed more than four years ago with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cell.
Like the rest of her family—including her two children—her sister, Renee Rizzo, and brother-in-law, Jimmy Peltier, were devastated.
Rizzo and Peltier, a marketing professor and faculty advisor to the American Marketing Association chapter at UW-Whitewater, believe research is key in the fight against multiple myeloma.
There is no cure for the disease, but there are treatments available.
Peltier presented his sister-in-law's story to the marketing students, and they chose the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation as the beneficiary of their annual fundraising event.
Event coordinator Ashley Drews said the group selects causes "near and dear" to members' hearts.
"It makes it even better if we know someone that we are helping," she said.
The group hopes to raise $6,000.
The chapter will host a casino night Saturday, April 18. The theme of the event is "Betting on a Cure." For every $250 a person wins playing classic casino games, he or she receives one raffle ticket. Raffle prizes include club tickets to a Green Bay Packers game, a team-autographed Packers football, tickets to a Wisconsin Badgers football game, luggage and a GPS navigation device.
The event also features a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction and a disc jockey.
Peltier said his sister-in-law is "excited" the group plans to make a donation to the research foundation on her behalf.
