GLADIATOR GAMES

The Rock County Gladiators have scheduled these games for 7 p.m. at Monterey Stadium in Janesville:

Saturday, May 2: Fargo-Moorehead Liberty of the Northern Power Football League.

Saturday, May 9: Jay County Panthers of southern Indiana, from the Grid Iron Football Alliance.

For more information, go to www.rcgladiators.com.

— A semi-pro football team denied access to Janesville’s Monterey Stadium in 2007 will play two games there in May.

The Rock County Gladiators have been playing their home games on the field of the former Beloit Catholic High School. They recently worked out a deal with the Janesville School District administration to play two preseason games at Monterey.

The problem with the 2007 request was that the Gladiators wanted to play all summer and into September, and officials were concerned the field would be ruined for the Craig and Parker high school teams.

But games in May are not a problem, said Kevin Porter, district athletics director, because the annual field maintenance doesn’t start until late May or early June.

The Gladiators will pay the same rate as any for-profit group would pay with use of the field lights: $150 an hour plus $27 an hour for each of two district custodians, who would be paid at the overtime rate.

“That’s pretty much in line with other teams in the IFL (Ironman Football League) that use the local stadiums,” Gladiators vice president A.J. Albrecht said. “… We’re just excited to have the opportunity to show Janesville what we’re all about.”

Albrecht said the team probably would use the facility for 4 1/2 to six hours. He said the team has heard from many who said they would attend games if they were played in Janesville.

Albrecht said the visiting teams would spend money at local hotels and restaurants.

The Gladiators must show proof of liability insurance, district officials said. The team will use the locker rooms, public-address system, restrooms and the concessions stand.

Albrecht complimented school officials, saying they were gracious, helpful and informative, which was not always the case in 2007, he said.

He especially complimented school board member Kevin Murray, who guided him through the application process, he said.

Albrecht said he hopes the school district will be impressed with how the Gladiators take care of the facility.

“And hopefully, it would lead to a few more games down the road,” Albrecht said. “They’ve given us no guarantees that there would be more games, but the opportunity is there.”

The team also is interested in playing games at other county high school stadiums, because many players come from towns such as Beloit, Milton, Evansville and Edgerton, Albrecht said.

We would like to hear anyone that is interested in doing a halftime show. We invite the HS or Middle School bands, we have a cheer team made up of local men and women who perform along with the men who run, coach and play for the Gladiators. If you would like to perform at halftime then get ahold of us via email (rc_gladiators@yahoo.com) and we can possibly set something up. We love being a family oriented event that can be enjoyable to all who come out.
With that I want to personally thank all of you for your positive feedback on our team and hope to see you out on May 2nd and May 9th cheering us on. Go Green and Black.

Thank you.

Or perhaps the Gladiator Organization would love to have Orchestra play at halftime to help promote them. Just a though.

i don't mean to be rude, but why cant you all get together and just play your music, you all have instruments right? and what does that have to do with the gladiators playing football?

justsome1here....I'm not at all offended by your opinion.

But I guess you just don't realize that "supply and demand" applies to the arts and entertainment side of life also.

That appears to be your problem.

justsome1here,

It's not the Gladiators fault that the community is not supporting you. That is your problem you need to drum up sopport for yourselves. It look like thats what the Gladiators did and are doing. they didn't ask for tax payer help they went out and work for what they got. You do't get it your trying to put the blame on them and it's on you. I guess it offends you that they worked at it and sucsseded and you don't want to work for it you want to cry and wine about it. If this offend you than good because I would not support you know if the concerts were $1.00. Quit wineing and take a lesson from these guy's work for what you want if it's important to you quit being a cry babe!!!!!!

JohnDoe,paytomuchtax - Yes I read the article. Not impressed. The point of the post was to enlighten members of this community that 80 musicians will not be able to share their gift because the members of this community fail to support it. "Under the leadership of founding Director Dalvit, Dr. Crawford Gates, and the current music director, Dr. Robert Tomaro, the symphony has grown to attract players from southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. It has changed from a group of volunteers to a non-profit corporation that provides the Stateline area with outstanding musical performances." If you are offended by that opinion, that is your problem.

justsome1here,

Did you read the article they did not ask for funding for this in fact the article states they are paying for the use of it. They did not take any funding from you or anyone else. So before you go puting up posts like yours read the article. I'm against the Jr Hockey team because it is geting tax payer money but these guy are not so don't poop poop on ther parade they are doing it the right way. I will support them and go to there games because I choose to. Way too go Gladiators you did it the right way and I believe you will got alot of support.

Just wondering, but how much do the musicians pay to play?

You are comparing apples to oranges.

justsome1here- this article has nothing to do with music. The Gladiators also do not recieve funding. They develop fundraisers to get the needed money to operate. Janesville is a sports town, we love sports. That is why people will show up to watch the Gladiators for these games.

JANESVILLE — No Verdi and no “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

The Beloit Janesville Symphony announced Friday it has canceled its April concerts and July Fourth shows.
.
How sad that once again music and the arts have to suffer. There seems to be no end to the support a junior hockey team and other sports get in this community, while people that truly have a gift will not be able to share that with others because of a lack of funding.
.
About the Symphony
Lewis Dalvit founded the Beloit Civic Symphony in 1954. It was then known as the Beloit Civic Symphony. By 1971, the Beloit Symphony was performing regularly in Janesville, and it then became known as the Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra. Now we know it as the Beloit Janesville Symphony.

Since its founding, the symphony has grown from 35 players to over 80. The symphony performs 15 concerts each year in Beloit and Janesville, Wisconsin. www.beloitjanesvillesymphony.org

This is Isaac, and yes i am still 72, but i do live in Ohio, I had to relocate because of work. I am only able to play in a few games this year. I am very thankful to the coaches and the team for letting me come back to do so. I don't know if everyone knows that we all pay to play on this team. We all have jobs but work very hard to make this team work. We are all very very thankful for the opportunity to play in Janesville. Please come down and support us and watch some very good competitive games.

Happy for Gladiators Orginization. Everyone should go to the game and support the team. They really deserve it. The May 2nd game against Fargo/Moorhead is a team ranked top 20 nationally in semi-pro football. Should be a very good game as the Gladiators also have a talented team with some new additions this year.

YES! Finally a cheery story about a group that's not asking for anything other than a chance! How refreshing. While I can't support the hockey proposal at this economic time, I applaud this hard-working football group for their hard work and tenacity in staying with the Monterey Stadium access idea and for paying their own way. And they didn't even have to ask for beer sales at the event!
I hope it works out well and that we see a lot of local support and interest in this committed group of footballers. Perhaps the Gazette could start regularly covering this group's games as well, both at home and away? Good luck, guys!

Beloitguy, you are not kidding about some behavior on the field. It's crazy how two or three players can ruin a teams perception. As captain and board member we have eliminated most of the guys that were problematic. We want to be role models for kids and it begins with acting mature. We want to create family atmosphere at the games. Hope everyone comes out and enjoys the 2 games.

Thanks for those who were involved in making all this possible.

Go Gladiators

ihavealife- You make my point for me. People misrepresent the facts. The 200K is to remodel the rink regardless of the Junior team coming to Janesville. The office/locker room/concession updates will be used even if WHP pulls out and decides not to bring a team to Janesville. This blog is about the Gladiators, not hockey. Hope they announce the dates and times for these games soon !!!

Hey guess what? This story is about the Gladiators. All you whiners that keep constantly crying about the hockey rink. GET OVER IT!! It's going to happen! You lose. You can also CHOOSE to attend a hockey game just like the football games. Guess what though? You need a rink to play hockey and our rink needs work. Common sense.

Bringing the Gladiators is a good idea in theory. The behavior on the field at times is a disgrace, though it has gotten better over time.

I'll support the Gladiator's just like I'll support the hockey team. If the city had taken care of the rink in the same way that the school district takes care of the stadium, there would be no huge "hockey" issue. By the way, the city council only approved spending 200K to make remodel the rink not the millions some claim in their posts.

Looking forward to going to the games. At least this isn't being shoved down our throats like that hockey thing. We can choose to attend or not and we do not need to spend a million tax payer dollars to do it. Awesome!
