Student expelled for texting drug deals

— A high school student was expelled Tuesday after being accused of sending text messages to set up drug deals.

It was the first such case reported in the Janesville School District.

The student received the harshest expulsion sentence available. He or she is expelled permanently.

A teacher caught the student using the cell phone during the school day in late March, said Superintendent Karen Schulte. Students may possess cell phones at school, but they must keep them turned off during the school day.

There was a question of whose phone it was, so a teacher or assistant principal checked it out and discovered 12 messages relating to deals for marijuana or ecstasy, Schulte said.

The student admitted to dealing drugs, Schulte said.

All the messages were sent during one day, Schulte said. She did not know if other messages had been sent on other days. The student did not have drugs in his or her possession.

The student had previous disciplinary measures for drug possession.

The school district does not reveal the name of the school or gender of the students when it announces expulsions because laws require the identities of disciplined students to be kept confidential. Officials worry that too much information would allow someone to identify the expelled student.

This brings to 30 the number of students expelled this school year, compared with 32 at this time last year.

localboy, you are misunderstanding my point of view. I don't condone drug use, or especially dealing. I'm just saying that there is more to a person than whether or not they smoke pot. And to immediately write them off as a bad person is wrong.

Parents pay taxes. Parents enroll their kids in school and every school has rules and by-laws that students must adhere to. Parents buy the cell phones and put the child on their plan (in most cases). It comes down to the parents to regulate the activity of their minor child.

So why do kids have their phones turned on during school again?

Is that what happened on Wall Street? The investors were all high, msleo?

msleo & hawk - congressman, and attorney generals also drive drunk. Does this mean it is ok? Based on your rational, if you are really smart, then it is ok to smoke, deal, and do pot. It is wrong (both) and we need to stop it. Quit defending people who take drugs by using the driving drunk card. By the way, if you smoke pot (illegal) and then you drive (illegal), it is just as bad as drunk driving.

msleo, I agree. I think there are plenty of extremely intelligent people who smoke pot. You can't define a person by one activity in which they choose to partake.

Let me clarify; Not all pot smokers "grow up" and not all that choose alcohol as their drug end up in the gutter. But to say a pot smoker is a waste is a small mind way of thinking! You WI sheltered people need to get out in the real world!! Then you can speak you opinion with facts behind your words.

"It is because people will rationalize crimes now, because "they did it when they were younger"."
What do you say about all those that drive drunk which is also illegal. MANY more WI people try to down play, "rationalize" that big part of the drug world!! You all are a bunch a hypocrites!
Sarah- Yes I have names. You need to also pull your head out of your a**! Doctors, lawyers, teachers, CEOs, the list of high school pot smokers is so expansive it would blow your small mind!
My point was that even high school pot smokers/dealers can and will make choices that place them higher up in the world than most of you! But those that use the drug alcohol end up in the gutter world of bars and strip clubs.

To all of you sympathizers: ZERO TOLORENCE. It doesn't matter what YOU did when you were younger, or what the President did, or some doctors, we need to stop it now. This is why each generation gets worse. It is because people will rationalize crimes now, because "they did it when they were younger".

Devils advocate:
Have you ever heard of kids just talking the talk? Or in this case...texting the talk?
I also suspect quite a few adults posting some less than truths and making themselve out to be more than they really are....
Seriously though, drug dealing is not cool....but do they really have all the facts to warrent kicking a student out of school permanently? So where do you think that will lead? Guess it's just easier to wash one's hands than to attempt to reform & make a change. Are we giving up too easy?

SaraB1, are you really that naive or just trying to get someone to drop a name for everyone to pounce on?
I recently met a priest who discussed some of his early escapades while attending the seminary...and I have all the respect in the world for that man who is HONEST and HUMAN (bet the man upstairs does too).
p.s. yep, I admit to checking the online dictionary with this post.

So they expelled them with only being accused? And since when so teachers get to go through cell phones? Just turn it into the office and wait for someone to claim it.

Very stupid remark! Our taxes don't 'go down' when they kick out a student. Not to mention the ton of early pot dealers that became doctors, CEOs, wall street investors.......

I took away my daughter's texting because we felt it was easier for her to make plans that we didn't know about. If she does it on the phone, atleast I can eavesdrop :) haha

I'm NOT condoning what this kid did by any stretch of the imagination, but, can the school REALLY go through someone's phone? In this case, I'm glad they did. But....

Smokers patio was still at Parker in the mid to late 80's. I believe it was about 88 when they removed/closed it. It was located behind the school.

We didn't have cellphones when I was in school, so this wouldn't have happened. You could smoke cigarettes in the school, too. Believe it, or not.
