Beloit fans tear up over Gokey's departure

BELOIT Walk among the congregation at Faith Builders International in Beloit, and it seems as though everybody is Danny Gokey’s close friend.
And that’s not because Gokey was among the three semifinalists on the stage of the “American Idol” TV singing contest Wednesday night.
So the disappointment was genuine when Ryan Seacrest announced that Gokey would not be one of the two finalists on the show.
Men and women teared up. Teenagers started a cheer: “Go D! Go D!”
Some 200 people came to their church Wednesday, as they have been doing for weeks, to praise God and then to watch their hero advance to the final stages of the competition.
They all had gone through the grief when Gokey’s wife, Sophia, died last year, shortly before he auditioned for the show.
Their pastor saw that Gokey needed a purpose in life after his loss, friends said, so he pushed Gokey to audition, even though he wasn’t sure he wanted to.
The congregation looked stunned Tuesday as the news sank in.
The Rev. Terry Morehouse quickly stepped up and spoke:
“We all know this guy’s life has changed tremendously. And we know this guy’s set for life, and it’s the will of God. Let’s not hold our heads down. It’s a good thing.”
Crying in the second row was Sandra Marko: “He’s one of my closest friends. At least we’re hoping he’s going to be coming home. We know he has a big career ahead of him, so maybe he’s not coming back so soon.”
Some said beforehand that they believed God wanted Gokey to win.
“Because he has faith behind him. He has faith in God,” said Sequoia Rogers, a UW-Whitewater student.
And if God doesn’t want him to win?
“He’s going to open up another door for him. It won’t be the end,” said Rogers’ fellow student Haley Castro.
Gokey has been the praise and worship leader for Faith Builders International in Beloit and its sister congregation in his hometown of Milwaukee for over four years.
Otis Beaty, who backed Gokey up on drums, recalled Gokey got sick to his stomach when he first took the microphone to lead worship.
Now, “it’s so unreal to know that Dan is a celebrity now,” Beaty said.
As sadness set in, Beaty put his arm around the neck of Ruben “Papin” Burgos, who has known Gokey since his youth.
“He’s a very humble person. He has a very genuine love for people,” Burgos said. “What you see is what you get.”
Burgos said Gokey has a passion for leading people to God. “He’s just joyous on stage, and you can’t help but feel good.”
But now, friends believe, Gokey is headed for a career with his other love, singing.
Ironically, the show uses a term from the Bible, “idol,” and of course, Christianity opposes false gods.
Morehouse is not happy with the name of the show. “We do not idolize Danny in any way, shape or form,” he said. “We can’t say enough about what this guy has been through in the past year. ‘American Idol’ is just a TV show, which is just a vehicle for him to go to the next level in his life, with his gift.”
And Gokey’s friends will be right behind him, cheering every step of the way.
Marko, despite her tears, is looking forward to more triumphs for her friend. She’s also got tickets to the sold-out Milwaukee stop on the American Idol tour.

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah......
American Idol this, American Idol that.
Gets so tiresome. ENOUGH ABOUT AMERICAN IDOL!
Then there were some rubes actually shedding tears over Gokey's elimination? As if....
Thousands of children going hungry in this country, soldiers getting their legs blown off by roadside bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the total downfall of our economy.
But let's shed a tear over Danny Gokey. Because that's where our priorities lay.
To be an die hard, obsessive–compulsive fan of 'American Idol' is to be a brainwashed 'American Idiot'

I have been sitting here trying to come up with a response and all I can come up with is
that I won't even entertain the comment that unless I am born again I belong to the devil. You are way out there. I don't need a book to live by-I live in the real world and accept people for whom they are -don't matter religion-color-sexuality-whatever. Good-bad-or indifferent!. And I pray every nite -maybe more than ever as my husband is dying from cancer. And I know that God hears me and does not look me up in his book to see if I am born again. And then say oh no I'm not listening to her she is not born again -she belongs to the devil. What a ludicrous statment that was. He loves me for who I am not what I am and as long as I do good in the world he will always be on my side.

To all you people that think all people are God's children, you better read your bible. The bible says unless you are born again, you belong to the devil. So not all people belong to God. The Gospel of John is a good place to start. And just a few weeks ago Miss California was trashed by a gay person so don't tell me that don't have a agenda. As for American Idol I hope for the best for Kris.

This is a singing competition -who cares about their sexuality and why even bring it up? It has nothing to do with the way they sing. And as far as children looking up to a "Gay American Idol" again what does their sexualtiy have to do with it? I tought my children to be open minded and that we are all God's children no matter what. Are you saying that heterosexuals are better than anyone one else just because of what goes on behind closed doors? Ridiculous! And as far as Paula giving Chris a song that no one knew so that he would fail that is a bit out there as well. Chris did a great job with it. And yes this sometimes becomes a popularity contest but may the best singer win -regardless.

totellthetruth: The church's website makes mention of a food pantry, groups for those battling substance use disorders and seeking Christian-based recovery, groups for teens, etc. I am not sure what other types of outreach you are looking for from these folks.

I will say this.....I used to attend New Ark Christian Center, now known as "Faith Builders" from the time I was 14-18, and in that time the entire "stystem" changed, and pushed my family and I away from their "beliefs".

I'm wondering if this is what totellthetruth is talking about?

I think Danny did a great job, and he will go on to have some sort of career, that's a given.

totellthetruth, We don't do a lot of coverage in Beloit, which has its own daily paper, but a lot of people in our regular coverage area were interested in Danny Gokey. That said, I'm curious: Which church is it that does so much for Beloit, and what do you mean by "crashing?"

I, too, call myself a Christian. I, too, have been behind Danny. Not only because he's a Christian, from Wisconsin but because he can sing. I have been a fan of Adam, too. So what if he is gay. He's very talented and who ever "wins", they will all have careers if they choose that path. Adam may be gay but I haven't seen any "behavior" that I would be ashamed of for being the "American Idol". Gay people like everyone else, are children of God and no one is perfect, not even I. Kris is ok but I hope Adam wins being he is more talented, in my view.

The talent portion of this contest ended after the top whatever were selected. After that it becomes a popularity contest. People vote for who they like the most. Granted Adam has the most talent of all of the singers, but Kris does well for himself. I just think it is hilarious that the Gazette is writing articles about a church that does no recognizable community outreach in a positive light, and crashing upon the ministry in Beloit that has a history of, and continues to do the most for the community.

I can't believe that in 2009 people will still choose to support a contestant based on his sexuality. Why does it matter one way or the other? Get over it. Are you saying if one contestant was obviously better than the other, you would still not vote for him just because he was gay? Stupid!

American Idol is supposed to be a talent competition. I don't know if Adam is gay or not but he is the most talented of the two left. I think Allison got ripped off. Chris should have gone home long ago. I am a christian (hence the name) but Chris just doesn't have the talent to be the next "American Idol" In my opinion. Adam is just in another league. I do however think that Chris is going to get the win just because the teeny boppers think he is cute. I have been a big fan of American Idol but it has just gotten out of hand with the voting thing because people do not vote for the best talent all of the time. *Stepping down from the soap box now* God bless all.

There are only two winners who have actually had any success and they are Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clakrson, The rest like Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, Clay Aiken, did better in sales than the winners did so its not over for Danny not by a long shot!

SarahB1, I don't want to hurt your feelings but when you see another man kissing another man it means that they are gay. The pictures are on the internet and Adam had them on his website until the competition. If you decide to support Adam and believe in his beliefs that's your choice. But Simon picks the U2 song "One" because the gay community adopted the song as a plea for tolerance. Yes Adam is gay and they are using American Idol for their agenda. Kris is a Christian and we who are Christians should support him. Kris has a lot of talent and could pull off one of the biggest upsets in American Idol history. Paula picks a song that nobody knew so that Danny would fail. No one knew the song. The judges couldn't afford the fan base to upset their choice in Adam. So Randy & Simon were on two talk shows last week to promote Adam. Is that fair? But Kris also has a huge fan base and if we join with his fan base, we will knock off Adam and the left agenda. Again I ask you to ask yourself do you want a gay American Idol for your children to look up to? If not then VOTE next week for Kris!

moethebartender: I agree with part of your comment. However, Adam Lambert has not confirmed his sexual identity whether that be heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual or asexual. Whatever ... I just know that the guy can sing! (P.S. I back Danny all of the way and will miss him now that we have an upcoming final without him.)

Yes, I would want my children to look up to the person that has the best talent in a TALENT competition. The fact that he is a homosexual should have NOTHING to do with the competition.
Also, I raise my kids to their taste in music from places other than a saccharin, scripted, glorified talent show

Number one show on TV, yes people watch American Idol. And yes Danny Gokey is a winner! The man has a great voice and he will go far with it. Thank you Danny for singing to all of us who watch you every week and voted for you. But Idol isn't over, there is one more week and all supporters of Danny should cast their votes toward Kris. Lifestyles of artists should be look at and even though Adam has a good voice. Ask yourself is he someone you want your children to lookup to as a American Idol?

Brewernut: I think the service was held first, followed by the TV show. I, too, was disappointed last night that Danny did not advance to the final two. Today, however, I am nothing but thrilled for the guy and hope he has no regrets. He made Wisconsin proud and I hope he gets a well-earned break before the summer concert tour begins.

"fool" is right. He is free to pursue his own career and with the public recognition he got, he did not lose. Let's just hope that he does not stray from his religious morals and values because the temptation will be there to do so.

The winner of American Idol will be contractually bound to all sorts of personal, artistic and professional restrictions and obligations. As sad as it seems today, Danny is much better off not winning the title of Idol. In every meaningful sense of the word, he actually won.
