EVANSVILLE — No one was injured Thursday morning when “an elderly customer” drove “through the wall” at M&I Bank, 25 N. Madison St., Evansville, bank manager Dave Holterman said.

The driver appeared to be pulling into a parking stall but continued over a curb and through the window on the west side of the bank, Police Chief Scott McElroy said.

He estimated half of the vehicle or more rested inside the bank.

“The vehicle literally went through the window and was inside the bank,” McElroy said. “Thank goodness no one was injured. We are very, very fortunate.”

The accident happened just before 10 a.m.

Names of the male driver and female passenger were not available Thursday because police were working on the accident report, he said.

McElroy said there were no indications that alcohol or a medical condition caused the accident.

Bank officials were assessing the situation and closed the bank after the accident, Holterman said.

“We dodged a real bullet today,” McElroy said.
