Host Vikings take second at invite
JANESVILLE The 28th annual Janesville Parker Track and Field Invitational was short on teams, but long on talent.
Brookfield Central, thanks to dominating performances in the distance and throwing events, won the three-team invite with 251 points. The host Vikings were second with 227.5, while Kenosha Tremper was third with 152.5.
Parker, which will compete in the Big Eight Conference meet on Tuesday night at Middleton, won three of the four relay races. The Vikings’ Nick Cahill, a state qualifier a year ago, also won the long jump and triple jump.
“Central’s got a nice team, and it came down to the last event (discus) to decide things,” Parker coach Joe Dye said. “We had a number of kids step up and do a nice job, and now we can look ahead to Tuesday.
“The most important thing about tonight is the fact that we’re pretty healthy heading into the conference meet.
“I’ve said all along that we’re a young team that has a chance to be pretty good by the end of the year, and I believe we’re heading in that direction.”
Parker pole vaulter Cody Speaker continued his strong season. Speaker cleared 13-6 to win the event, and has only lost once this season. He also ran on Parker’s victorious 800-meter relay team along with Adam Vesterfelt, Ryan Shelton and LaVell Hewlett.
Other individual winners for Parker were Shelton in the 200 (23.3), Duncan Brose in the 800 (2:04.7) and M. Jay Bouska in the high jump (5-8).
Central won the team title thanks to a 1-2-3 finish in the 1,600, 3,200 and shot put and a 1-2 finish in the discus.
