Despite the economy, Rock County residents were generously donating to the nation's largest annual food drive, the Letter Carriers Food Drive.

The United Way of North Rock County reports a 14 percent increase in donations from local communities. Beloit and Clinton set a new record by donating more than 27,500 pounds of food. Altogether, the official results show Rock County residents donated more than 90,000 pounds of food.

On May 9, residents put their donations by their mailboxes, letter carriers and volunteers collected the donations, and distributed them to local food pantries. The 24,000 pounds donated to the Janesville Salvation Army will feed about 530 families.
