Warhawks’ NCAA run comes to end
MOLINE, ILL. UW-Whitewater’s baseball team accomplished half of what it needed to do Monday.
After winning the first game against Carthage College in the NCAA Division III regional, the No. 3-seeded Warhawks’ season ended when they could not contain the top-seeded Red Men in the rematch and lost, 8-3.
Whitewater coach John Vodenlich said the Warhawks were ready to play, but Carthage had the advantage with a day of rest.
“While the (loss) came down to other factors, (Carthage) had a day off and we had to play some games,” Vodenlich said referring the two must-win games Whitewater played on Sunday. “We had to go through pitching for four games.’’
The Warhawks lost to Millsaps College on Saturday, which turned the tournament into an up hill climb.
“It upset us a little,” Vodenlich said. “After we lost, we knew it was going to be a long haul back, but we forced that final game.’’
Carthage (36-7) advances to the eight-team NCAA Division III World Series at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. The double-elimination tournament begins Friday.
Carthage opens World Series play with a 10 a.m. game against College of Wooster (39-9). Carthage finished fifth in the World Series in 2007.
The Red Men built a 3-0 lead in the second game against Whitewater and hung on with the help of a two-run homer by Chris Shannon in the sixth inning and a solo homer by Mike Hughes leading off the seventh.
The Warhawks, who finished 30-19, scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth, but couldn’t get close enough to make Carthage sweat. The Red Men scored the final two runs in the eighth.
Junior lefthander Williams Lovera pitched the first seven innings for the Warhawks. Lovera, who made three previous starts this season, held the Red Men scoreless for two innings, before Carthage got two runs in the third.
Carthage starter Jordan Jaehne-Llanas pitched a complete game to improve to 8-2. He allowed nine hits, but did not walk a Warhawk and struck out 10.
“The guy who pitched for them had an amazing game,” Vodenlich said. “He pitched a really nice game and my hat is off to him.’’
Whitewater stayed alive in the double-elimination tournament with its first-game victory after winning two games Sunday.
Sam Petrasko’s homer with two outs in the second gave the Warhawks the lead in the first game. Kevin Zalnis doubled home Rob Coe to make it 2-0 in the third.
The Red Men tied it with a two-run fifth, but the Warhawks scored the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the inning.
After the first two were out, Ben Kuhlmann reached on an error. Coe singled Kuhlmann to third.
Zalnis singled to score Kuhlmann, and Matt Millar singled home Coe.
Aaron Dott pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and eight walks. The junior lefthander struck out nine and two double plays helped him earn his seventh victory of the season.
