Let the bidding begin: GM puts plant's equipment up for auction

JANESVILLE In what appears to be another indication that General Motors has no production plans for its idled Janesville plant, the automaker will take to the Internet today to auction off hundreds of pieces of equipment.
The Michigan-based auction house Maynards will conduct an online auction for more than 400 lots of tools, hoists, welders and other equipment.
The automaker opened the plant Tuesday to prospective bidders and other interested parties. Reporters, however, were turned away at the door.
The Janesville auction includes equipment ranging from heavy-duty lathes and mills to step ladders and storage cabinets.
GM ended production of full-size sport utility vehicles at the plant in December. Medium-duty truck production on the plant's Isuzu line ended in April.
In recent months, GM has deployed what it calls a "reuse team" to Janesville to assess everything in the 4.8 million-square-foot plant. Equipment that can be salvaged for use in other plants has been saved and shipped to other facilities.
Equipment that GM doesn't want goes on the Internet auction block at 10 a.m. today. Successful bidders must remove their items by June 25.
The Janesville plant and its equipment are registered as collateral in the $13.4 loan the automaker received from the federal government earlier this year. A strict interpretation of the loan document is that GM cannot sell, lease, donate or otherwise dispose of the plant and its property.
But a GM spokesman said Tuesday that the Janesville auction received federal government approval.
"We don't do anything without the Treasury Department's OK," he said.

Whoanellie: Getting some of it paid for? Try all of it. That is something GM is taking the burden of: not the government. If you don't like it, maybe look for a job who does offer tuition reimbursement or job retolling if laid off. Yes, Lear employees are also getting their school paid for-by the government. But, this is because of 4 jobs that were outsourced to another country.
.
Secondly, I'd question the strength and purity of what your friend is telling you. If (she) completed part of the program already, why is she not in it currently? Was she dropped because (she) didn't get a strong enough score on a test/in a class. It slips me now, but I believe a 85% is required to continue on. IF (she) was dropped, then she would need to reapply--just like everyone else. And, I also want to say that if (she) was dropped because of grades there is a waiting period she has to serve first. Although, that may not be after the first drop.
I know an ex-UAW employee in a tech school's "ADN" program. Really they are taking the prereq's to be considered program ready--only then can they apply to the adn program--about 3 or 4 semesters of coursework. I can assure you, they were not bumped to the top of any list. And, short of tuition reimbursement via TAA, there has been no other preferential treatment that other students are not privy to.
AND....if BTC is "dealing with GM employees first" it might have to do with funding. It is a lot like doctor's offices. Insurance? Sure, the doctor will see you now. Cash patient? Sorry, the doctor is all booked up.
.
A secondary education is a priviledge--not a right. It doesn't REALLY matter who pays for it or who gets in first....the former UAW employee will still need to do the coursework and fulfill all graduation requirements. And, since they are a bunch of uneducated hicks working in a factory who are use to being coddled and sitting at Zachow's instead of working...I'm sure they'll flunk out because the union isn't their to save their butts and before you know it, your friend will get right in!! (KIDDING, btw!!...SEVERE sarcasim used!!)
On a more related note to the topic: can the public bid on anything in this auction??

And I quote from JozeMozes... "I do not know if you take some type of perverse pride in being the know it all smart ass but your dribbling diatribe is tiring"..."you are undoubtedly a lost cause. Opinions are like buttholes. And my and others opinions here validate your lack of reasonable thought"... It goes on and on and on and on and on.
All this from someone that supports David J. Fogderud, that 66 year old guy from Beloit that calls himself a 'pastor'. Fogderud was ARRESTED for not cooperating with police during a traffic stop after two young boys reported a kidnapping attempt involving Fogderud.
Let's all get our dictionaries handy and use big words in our posts, like JozeMozes does. And let's all post weblinks (cause as we all know, those are always safe)
For a full list of JozeMozes's twisted comments, just click on its name to the left of its post (in the red font) after it tries to come-back with a 'witty, intellectual' response. No need for a weblink here, folks.

Unlike eCowards who suggest removal of idiotic posts I love when the Gazette leaves them so other can see how ridiculous and off topic they are.
We can read all of your pointless thoughts easily also: http://gazettextra.com/users/wesgonsin/c...
I tend to try to stay on topic and offer my opinion until unsavory persons such as yourself cannot help but join an otherwise intelligent conversation. Easy to get side tracked entertaining mean spirited people like yourself so full of vile and injecting your opinion regardless of who it offends. Sort of like the American Idol whining, lol. Some choose not to contribute to stories of no interest to them. I suggest you try that but you said it best here:
Quote Wesley "Won't care about how other people look at me for feeling this way (their opinions are useless, and I don't care)
I could just care less, anymore. I wish I was Canadian (and yes, I am looking into that, to)"
PLEASE by all means move to Canada. We need people who care about other peoples feelings here.

JozeMozes was laid off from two separate jobs in five months.
I think it has something to do with the attitude. People that gossip and talk smack behind fellow employees backs are always the first to go, and nobody likes a whiner.
Now, JozeMozes sits behind the keyboard all day, hunting for Gazette posters to slam from the safety of home. JozeMozes also is very into computer video games, so you know the type... An adult with an online gaming obsession.
I wish JozeMozes would have moved to Waukesha before being laid off from that last job....

Joker you are undoubtedly a lost cause. Opinions are like buttholes. And my and others opinions here validate your lack of reasonable thought. You think your the only person who knew GM was doomed? Grow up! Some of us choose compassionately not to rub salt into other peoples wounds.
whoanellie, BlackHawk technical college is ran by an incompetent administration and worse yet an incompetent Rock County Board of Supervisors. Several years ago when the referendum was passed to expand BTC it was put to us, THE TAXPAYERS, that capacity needed to be desperately expanded at a significant cost with work to be completed by our own local JP Cullen. Guess What? They fleeced us and did not expand capacity to no wheres near justify the expansion costs. It sure is a beautiful building now and reminds me of how it has failed Rock County much like painting the blighted Case Feed building would look pretty but only hide the underlying rot!
I have also heard the rumor but can assure you that as bad as politics are everywhere and the solutions to fix these problems so are the silly people that perpetuate lies. BTC has had a substantial wait 2-3 years for their Nursing Program for some time. This is after you are program ready! A conventional College can be faster! Sad! Sadder was listening to Rep. Mike Sheridan pointless and rambling diatribe at this years graduation commencement watching my wife's friend graduate the ADN program thanks to some racist and over opinionated Nursing instructors who seemingly suffer from GOD syndrome. Good luck to your friend. Good Luck to all of Rock Counties unemployed!

As much as I feel sorry for the people who lost their jobs from GM, I found out something I think is very unfair! A friend was trying to get into the nursing program and was turned down even though they had finished part of it already, and was told there might be a 7 year wait for him to get in, they are taking GM employees first! and some are even getting it paid for!! I hope if my husband loses his job he would get the same treatment but I doubt it!!!!!

Ah, the censorship police is back. Ok, Gazette, let me try this again. Joze, I speak the truth. I am not negative, I am right. I bring logic and intelligence to this discussion. I have every right to express my opinon, so deal with it. I am telling the truth. Janesville is in real trouble right now and we need to come up with solutions, not complaining that GM may stop paying my pension.

As far as the plant itself is concerned.
All you need to hear are two words: GARY INDIANA!
.
Those not familiar with Gary; the city was a creation of US Steel in the hey days of the industrial revolution. After the great depression hit, and the steel industry almost went bust, the once thriving Gary quickly turned into a ghost town, a true modern day Pompeii. All the huge steel plants were vacated, and have literally been sitting there empty for decades now. Most are totally condemned buildings, on the verge of total collapse.

If they get $300K for what remains, I guess they could make a 0.0000001% payment on the $50 billion or so that they are in debt!
It would be like running up a credit card bill to $50,000, and then running to the blood bank every month to get your $20 to make that minimum payment!

Lynda. **Hug** High Five. Rascal that is an EXCELLENT point! GM or their staffing agencies for healthcare employees will become instantly liable should this happen and would be an easy class action for any competent attorney or firm.

Joker: Your posts almost always note negative connotations in regards to the GM plant in Janesville. Instead of your always "I'm right, your wrong" attitude, why don't you just put a lid on it and move on. It's becoming ever so redundant and boring.

Diplomat, in response to your post, I have to say, "Huh?" You make no sense. I know more about the economy than you could ever dream about. I also contribute quite a bit to the economy by paying my employees and other investments around the city.
I wonder if GM is coming back to Janesville?

TheJoker,
I hope you don't plan on upgrading to a double-wide anytime soon. You will be upside down trying to sell your trailer if you put it on the market today. And guess what, the local housing market dive also has been a result of the sudden increase in unemployment. You might want to go back to school to see how the overall local economy effects your standard of living. You might not be laughing once you realize that.

Former workers beware! A safe with medical and confidential records for hundreds of employees was found in a dumpster miles away months later. This occured at the closed Delphi West (Chevy in the hole) auction in Flint. some things got on the internet with social security numbers and things like physicatric records. Someone from the UAW should demand to be present and Inspect all office equiptment. These are private companies in there and they do not care. Check with UAW local 659 or Flint Journal. and maybe someone will talk.Thats all someone trying to start a second career needs.

Joker usually I ignore the GM issues as I feel sorry for those who lost their jobs and way of life. I do not know if you take some type of perverse pride in being the know it all smart ass but your dribbling diatribe is tiring. If you are of the intellect that you are very proud of please by all means run for Rock County supervisor. There is a position open.
To all of the UAW members in Rock County especially those still unemployed at Lear, LSI and Alcoa hang in there! Put this chapter behind you and know the story is finished.

The GM plant in Janesville will be the biggest nagging issue for this city over the next 20 years. Nobody will claim ownership, responsibility for maintenance, or assume the costs for the toxic waste there. Dozens of ideas for use of the building will be floated and none will happen. Fingers will be pointed, lawsuits will be filed and the plant will further rot as vandals and time begin to destroy the building.
Remember, you heard it here first!
