Edgerton advances, other softball scores

Short hits did the biggest damage for the Edgerton High’s top-seeded softball team Tuesday afternoon.

Four bunt hits keyed the decisive three-run fifth inning as the Crimson Tide defeated visiting Walworth Big Foot, 4-3 in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal game.

Edgerton (19-2), the Rock Valley North champion hosts Brodhead in the regional final Thursday. Edgerton defeated Brodhead, 1-0, during the confrence season, and the Cardinals went on to share the South Division title with Big Foot.

With the score tied 1-1, Big Foot’s Emilie Cerney hit a single that went past the Edgerton outfielder and scored two runs in the top of the fifth.

Edgerton responded with four bunt singles by Jenna Pope, Allison DeWar, Anne Tronnes and Molly McCall to get within a run. Meggie Schmidt then singled to center to bring in the tying and go-ahead runs.

Big Foot senior Cameron Niven kept the Chiefs in the game by striking out 12.

-- Brodhead 2, McFarland 0—Sophomore Erika Stampfli threw a no-hitter and drove in a run with a double to lead the Cardinals past visiting McFarland.

Brodhead plays at Edgerton on Thursday in the regional final that matches Rock Valley division champions.

Stampfli walked six for McFarland’s only base-runners. She struck out 14.

Brodhead scored both of its runs in the first inning.

-- Lakeside Lutheran 2, East Troy 0—Kristy Bruni threw a two-hit shutout and drove in one of her team’s two runs as Lakeside Lutheran beat host East Troy. Lakeside (13-8) also got an RBI from Katelyn Genz to advance to the regional finals.

Aimee Ambrose allowed six hits and struck out three for the Trojans (13-9)

-- Fort Atkinson 5, Jefferson 3—The Blackhawks pounded out 13 hits to defeat the Eagles in a regional semifinal.

Fort Atkinson (13-10) hosts Lakeside Lutheran on Thursday for a sectional berth.

Lexi Weigand led Fort at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, including a triple. Emilie Bakken went the distance for Fort, allowing three runs on seven hits, striking out seven and walking none.

-- Monroe 8, River Valley 3—Kelsey Erickson went 4-for-4 including a pair of doubles and triple to lead the Cheesemakers.

No. 2 seeded Monroe (16-9) will face No. 1 seed Prairie du Chien for a sectional berth this Thursday at Prairie du Chien.

Erickson, a sophomore, scored four runs and had two RBIs. Monroe starting pitcher Meghan Roberts retired the last 14 River Valley batters in order.

- Parkview 6, Turner 5 (9)—Parkview rallied from a 5-3 deficit with two runs in the top of the seventh, then won the Division 3 regional semifinal game at Beloit with a run in the ninth. No. 3-seeded Parkview plays at top-seeded Belleville on Thursday.

Turner’s Kiki Smith drove in two runs, and the Trojans finished 11-9.

-- Belleville 11, Clinton 4—Mallory Weber’s three-run double ignited a six-run fifth inning and put top-seeded Belleville into the a Division 3 regional final at home against Orfordville Parkview on Thursday.

Belleville (16-6) broke a scoreless tie with a run in the fourth before adding six in the fifth.
