— The WIAA Division 1 regional track and field meet brought out the best in the Janesville Craig High boys team.

The Cougars, thanks to individual wins from Matt McDonald and JoJo Pregont, finished a narrow second to Verona in the nine-team field. Craig scored 106.5 points, while the Wildcats had 113.5.

Janesville Parker was fourth with 89 points, and got wins from Cody Speaker in the pole vault and Nick Cahill in the triple jump, along with another strong outing from the 1,600 relay team.

Big Eight Conference champion Sun Prairie won the girls team title with 140, while Parker was third with 101 and Craig fourth with 74.5.

Defending state champion Shelby Demos won two events for the Vikings, and teammate Kelsey Jones won the 200. Craig’s Caroline Shea won the 400.

The Cougar boys used a balanced lineup to pick up the silver trophy. Craig coach Jeff Deininger said his team is peaking at the right time,

“Just a great, great effort for this team tonight,” Deininger said. “We’ve really come on over the last couple of weeks and it continued tonight.

“I’ve said all along that in a meet like this, our depth will allow us to score some points. Hopefully, we can keep building on this heading into the sectional meet.”

The four qualifiers in each event advanced to Friday’s sectional meet at Burlington.

The Parker boys, despite losing two of their top performers to injuries in the last 10 days, still managed a productive night.

In the last event of the meet, the state-ranked 1,600 relay team of Speaker, Ryan Shelton, Dan Treinen and LaVell Hewlett coasted to victory with a time of 3:28.46.

Longtime Parker boys coach Joe Dye said injuries this late in the season are difficult to overcome, but was pleased with his team’s performance.

“No one’s going to feel sorry for you, that’s for sure,” Dye said of the season-ending injuries to thrower Calvin Nauer and sprinter Adam Vesterfelt. “But they sure came at a bad time.

“All tonight was about was trying to survive to compete another day. And we’ve got a lot of kids that will be competing on Friday.”

Craig High girls coach Mark Marsden was also pleased with the way his team ran.

“In a meet like this, there are always surprises. Some good, and some not so good,” Marsden said. “And that was certainly the case for us tonight.

“Caroline and Katherine (Bagley) finishing 1-2 in the 400 was a real nice surprise. But there were a couple of other events where I thought we might get someone through, and we didn’t.”

Fort Atkinson senior Spencer Agnew won the 1,600 and the 3,200.
