Beloit trips up Janesville Parker baseball

BELOIT — A four-run first inning carried Beloit to a 4-2 Big Eight Conference baseball victory over Janesville Parker on Wednesday in the league finale for both teams.

Parker (6-17) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Kyle Johnson’s RBI groundout, but Beloit answered with four in its half to take the lead for good. Tylor Little’s two-run double keyed the rally.

“One bad inning,” Parker coach Brian Martin said of the loss. “After that, Andy (Kersten) really shut them down.

“And we left 11 men on base, so we had a lot of chances. We just couldn’t capitalize with a big hit.”

Kersten, a sophomore, allowed only two hits and two baserunners after the first.

The Vikings will open up tournament play by hosting a Division 1 regional semifinal game against Fort Atkinson on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Riverside Park.

“Our sectional is pretty wide open,” Martin said.

“If we can string together a couple of good games, you never know what can happen.

“There are a number of teams capable of winning our sectional, and I’d like to think we’re one of them.”
