Milton softball wins regional title, other scores

Milton High is back at the sectional level in WIAA Division 2 softball for the first time in three years.

The Red Hawks (17-5) earned in a berth in the Verona Sectional by beating Beloit Memorial, 2-0, and play top-ranked Kenosha Bradford in a semifinal game at 2 p.m. next Thursday.

Milton’s regional final battle at Beloit was scoreless until the seventh. Sophomore standout Jessi Duoss held the Purple Knights to three hits overall, escaping jams in the fourth and seventh innings.

Beloit had runners on second and third with two outs in the fourth, but Duoss struck out the next batter. Beloit had a runner on second with two out in the seventh, but Duoss got her ninth and final strikeout to end the game.

The Red Hawks scored the decisive runs in the seventh. Taylor Jones reached on a dropped third strike to open the inning. Whitney Shockness attempted to sacrifice Jones to second, but Shockness beat the throw to reach.

Jones and Shockness pulled off a double steal to get to scoring position. Junior Morgan Janes then delivered a two-run single.

-- Verona 3, Badger 2—Verona scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat visiting Badger in a Division I regional title.

Badger (13-7) scored single runs in the first and second innings, but Verona responded with two runs in the fifth.

Verona hosts Westosha in a sectional semifinal Thursday.

-- Lakeside 4, Fort Atkinson 0—Kristi Bruni’s two-hit pitching led Lakeside Lutheran past top-seeded Fort Atkinson in a Division 2 regional title game.

The Warriors (14-10) play Edgerton (21-2) at 1 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals of the Prairie du Chien Sectional.

Lakeside broke up a scoreless battle with Fort Atkinson’s Emilie Bakken in a three-run fifth inning. Heidi Loppnow led off with a single and scored the only run the Warriors need after throwing error on Katelyn Gentz’s bunt.

Gentz wound up on third base and scored on a passed ball. Ali Filter followed with an RBI triple and scored on Meg Lichtenberg’s sac fly.

Meghan Roberts blanked the Blackhawks on three hits, while Emily Rufenacht had three hits for Monroe.
