Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre raises his arms to the Lambeau Field crowd after the Vikings beat the Green Bay Packers 38-26 in an NFL football game Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, in Green Bay, Wis.

— Brett Favre still knows how to win big games at Lambeau Field, even if this one came for the enemy and to a chorus of boos.

For the second time in less than a month, Brett Favre sliced up his former team and stuck it to the franchise that cast him aside as the Minnesota Vikings beat the Green Bay Packers 38-26 at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

If walking out to waves of loud jeers from his former fans threw Favre off his game, it didn't last long. Despite being jeered repeatedly by Packers fans who once cheered his every move, Favre completed 17 of 28 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns. The Vikings (7-1) took a firm hold on the NFC North standings.

Rookie receiver Percy Harvin caught five passes for 84 yards and a touchdown and had five returns for 175 yards.

The Vikings' defense roughed up Favre's successor, Aaron Rodgers, sacking him six times. But with the Packers (4-3) on the verge of getting routed, Rodgers rebounded with three second-half touchdowns.

Already leading 17-3 at halftime, Favre temporarily reverted from game manager to gunslinger on the Vikings' first possession of the second half — and even that worked. Favre threw into triple coverage under pressure and Harvin came down with the ball while Charles Woodson, Atari Bigby and Nick Collins tumbled to the ground like extras in a slapstick comedy as the Vikings took a 24-3 lead.

Rodgers answered by driving the Packers for a field goal, then Green Bay turned a fumbled kickoff into a 16-yard touchdown pass from Rodgers to tight end Spencer Havner to cut Minnesota's lead to 24-13.

Green Bay forced a three-and-out, and Rodgers hit James Jones for a 42-yard gain to put the Packers in scoring position again. Facing third-and-4 at the Vikings 5, Rodgers rolled right and threw another touchdown to Havner — a converted linebacker who made the transition to tight end in training camp.

Harvin answered with a 44-yard kickoff return to the Green Bay 38, Favre hit Harvin for a third-down conversion, and a face mask penalty on Green Bay's B.J. Raji gave the Vikings first-and-goal at the 9. Later facing third down at the 2, Favre rolled right and threw to wide open tight end Jeff Dugan to put the Vikings up 31-20 early in the fourth quarter.

But Rodgers wasn't finished, scrambling for 35 yards to set up a 10-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings. After a failed 2-point conversion attempt, the Packers trailed 31-26 with 10:26 remaining.

Green Bay's defense finally put some pressure on Favre to force a punt, giving the ball back to the Packers with 8:13 remaining. After a 13-yard catch and run by fullback John Kuhn, Rodgers picked up a botched snap, threw complete to Donald Driver and picked up a roughing penalty on Ray Edwards to advance the ball to the Vikings 35.

But the drive stalled, and Mason Crosby missed a 51-yard field goal attempt.

Favre threw a screen pass to Peterson, who took it 44 yards down the left sideline to the Green Bay 15. With the Vikings facing third-and-11, Favre threaded a ball through the Green Bay secondary for a touchdown to Bernard Berrian — his fourth touchdown pass of the game.

Favre left the field surrounded by cameras, pumping his fist to a mix of cheers and boos as he jogged down the tunnel. He hugged cornerback Al Harris, Driver and Jennings.

Despite the final score, it was an awkward homecoming for Favre, whose high-profile standoff with the front office split the loyalties of Packers fans last summer.

There weren't many signs of a split on Sunday.

Fans booed Favre loudly — first when he walked out of the tunnel for pregame warmups, then again when he ran out of the tunnel for the game, and on every snap during the Vikings' first few offensive possessions.

"Welcome back to Lambeau Field, Brent," one fan's sign read.

And Favre got off to a shaky start, though it didn't cost the Vikings as dearly as it could have.

After the Vikings punted, Favre began his second series by stepping up to the line to call an audible — then unexpectedly taking the snap from center off his leg for a fumble.

The Packers recovered at the Minnesota 21, but had to settle for a 37-yard field goal by Crosby and a 3-0 lead.

Harvin responded with a 77-yard kickoff return, but the Packers appeared to stop the Vikings at the 9 — until Green Bay defensive lineman Johnny Jolly was called for a head-butt, the latest silly mistake in a season's worth of breakdowns for the penalty-plagued Packers.

Facing fourth-and-goal at the 1, Peterson went over the top for a 7-3 lead. After a stop by the Minnesota defense, the Vikings got a long punt return by Jaymar Johnson — then Favre went back to work.

Favre went 5-for-5 on a seven-play scoring drive, capping it with a 12-yard touchdown to tight end Visanthe Shiancoe. Ryan Longwell added a 41-yard field goal for a 17-3 halftime lead.

The Packers' offense had only 47 net yards of offense in the first half as Rodgers was sacked four times.

I don't think the Viking dominance over the Pack has anything to do with quarterbacks. Just look at what the two organizations have done in the past 5 years:

2004 Vikings signed Kevin Williams from Buffalo - All pro
To improve our defensive line we took Donnell Washington with the third pick - not on team
2004 Vikings signed Antoine Winfield from Buffalo - All pro
To improve our secondary we took DBs Ahmad Carroll in the first round and Joey Thomas in the second round - neither on team
2006 Vikings signed Steve Hutchinson from Seattle - All pro
To improve our line we took Daryn Colledge with the second pick - mediocre on a great day
2006 Vikings signed Ben Leber from San Diego - damn good linebacker
2006 Vikings signed Vinsanthe Shiancoe from New York - a very good tight end
2007 Vikings traded a first round pick and others for Jared Allen from KC – Future Hall of Famer
To address our pass rush needs we take Justin Harrell with a first pick - total bust
2008 Vikings signed Bernard Berrian from Chicago (not great but a starter)
To bolster our passing attack we draft Jordy Nelson with the first pick - OK but first round?
2009 Vikings signed Sage Rosenfels from Houston – to challenge Jackson before Brett
To address our back-up QB situation we draft Brohm with a second pick - ouch
2009 Vikings sign Brett Favre from retirement – Future Hall of Famer

Not only did the Vikings sign 8 starters from free agency including 5 pro bowl caliber players but they drafted the following starters with their first and second round picks during that 5-6 year span:
Percy Harvin
Phil Loadholt
Adrian Peterson
Sidney Rice
Chad Greenway
Pat Williams

I guess we know who has the better management team in place!

Brett Favre is a great quarterback. No one who knows anything about football can dispute that. His character, however, can certainly be drawn into question.

Remember folks, NFL football is a business. These guys play for money, not your love. Favre is no different, even though we all thought he was.

As for the game:
1. Johnny Jolly needs to be fined ... heavily.
2. Aaron Rodgers needs to run more wind sprints if he can't outrun a 300-pound defensive lineman.
3. Rodgers holds the ball way too long.
4. Rodgers needs to tuck the thing in and run more when the pocket breaks down.
5. Our offensive line sucks.
6. McCarthy needs to call more 3-step drop throws. Those actually worked but, once again, it wasn't until the fourth quarter that we figured that out.
7. We didn't get any more pressure on Favre this game than we did last game, save one series late.
8. Brad Childress, seriously?
9. Keep an eye on Spencer Havner and Clay Matthews.
10. Letting Favre go was the right move. It hurts now, and he's better than Rodgers right now. But two years from now, when Rodgers has some seasoning and looks like Favre did back in 1993 (and Favre finally is on the lawn tractor back in Mississippi), we'll be glad we started the process now rather than later.

ramstud, I've been a PACKER fan since 1950's. There were good times and there were bad times. I've seen them both and my loyalty has never waivered. But you specifically said "no one could have told you who Lombardi was until Favre showed up" and that is simply nonsense. They didn't name the Super Bowl trophy after him because he was an unknown and anyone who's followed the team prior to 1992 when Favre came around knew who Vince Lombardi was. I've known of Vince Lombardi long before Brett Favre was born.

Agree. Favre can still play but if he had the packers offensive line it would be all over. He cant move like he used to, he would be getting absolutely murdered behind that line. I dont know how Rodgers puts up the numbers he does when hes constantly running for his life. Thats good ol Teddy and his "build through the draft" strategy. By far the worst O-line in the NFL right now.

_____________
Seems it WAS up to Brett. You blind favre lovers never seem to realize that he RETIRED, after 4 or 5 years of hemming and hawing and holding the team hostage. Maybe if he wasnt so damn selfish and actually made a timely decision he would still be in GB. But the FACT is he RETIRED then at the last minute decided not to. As much as I agree that Thompson is a moron and needs to go, I dont blame him for trading Brett. HE retired, reiterated that he for sure wasnt coming back, so the team moved on. Brett can still play, he showed that over and over this year, but our QB is no slouch either.

Go ahead and argue my opinion but I've lived here long enough to know thats true for 90% of Packers fans.

I believe Brett when he said has never been on a team this good has a pretty good idea of talent and feels that the talent on the vikings is superior to that of the 96 packers so quit your whinning.

I will boo any player who has said in the media that he wants to beat the Packers because I am a Packer fan and I support my team. It doesn't matter if he once played for the organization.

I appreciate everything Favre accomplished while with the Packers and will cheer for him again when the Packers retire his number (if he shows) and when he is inducted into the HOF. But as long as he lines up on the other side of the line for our main division rival I will continue to boo long and loud because there is no way I want him to be successful, not fas a rival against my team. No true Packer fan wants that.

The Vikings are a great team and the Packers are a young mediocre team. The best team won both games this year. But the Vikings were a playoff team last year without Favre and look to be a lock to win the division now. The Vikings just better hope Favre can overcome his history of bad playoff performances the past 12 years if they hope to go deep into the playoffs...and he may do that considering all of the great talent around him.

If the Packers do not make the playoffs and the Vikings do, then i will probably cheer for him and the Vikings. But as long as we are directly competing against him, I want him to do poorly and yes, I may boo him.

The Favre apologists would have us believe that Favre was a completely innocent party in all of this which is simply not true. There is Favre's story and the Packer's story with the actual truth hiding somewhere in the middle.

If Brett hadn't left Aaron Rodgers would have not been able to show what he can bring to the table for this team. He's doing an amazing job leading the Packers. Farve is the past! Rodgers is the future! But I do have to admit that Brett Farve still cares for the Packer players, which is nice to see. Brett even stated last night after the game, that Green Bay will always be his favorite NFL team no matter who he is playing for, which is great; however he also stated that Packer fans cheer for the team first...which I agree 110%!! I'm a cheesehead at heart!! I always will be a Packer Fan!

REAL Packers fans have had to spend most of their lives watching a losing team. I can't speak for other fans but I enjoy the games as long as the team is in them. Truth: What makes Favre different is that he played 16 (or is it 17?) years in Green Bay. To welcome him back to town with loud booing (as he first set foot on the field during warmups and on the Vikings' first possession of the ball) was shameful. The only bright side on this issue is in the future ... hopefully, the Packer fans won't repeat the booing if and when Favre next plays at Lambeau Field.

Leroy Butler said:
When Brett comes out you do like any other opposing quarterback, you boo him. If you don’t want to boo him, don’t say anything. But if you’re going to stand up wearing Packer clothing or a Packer uniform and cheer when Brett Favre comes out, you should bring a bag and put it over your head. You don’t cheer for somebody to beat your team, I don’t care who it is. You don’t cheer for another quarterback. If you want to cheer Brett, just bring a bag, put it over your head and you can cheer, and no one will hear you and that’s fine. This is Aaron Rodgers’ show. Don’t let somebody come into your back yard and cheer against you. You don’t cheer for another guy to beat your team. I hope I’m crystal clear with these fans who say they love to see Brett Favre. Well, Brett Favre is gone. It’s Aaron Rodgers’ show. He’s the No. 1-rated quarterback in the NFC, including Brett Favre. I’m happy we’ll be good for the next 10 years. I hope they’ll cheer Aaron and boo Brett. If they don’t want to boo him, that’s their right. But any other quarterback they’d boo, what makes him so special? I mean, wait until he has his number retired, you can cheer him then. You can applaud him all you want.

I've got the Milwaukee package, so I wasn't at this game. Probably wouldn't have booed him, but can understand why he was.

Like the commentators said last night, there are two sides to this story, and the truth is somewhere in the middle. I didn't dislike either side of the equation until Favre made a point to play for the Vikings. He could've remained a Jet, but chose to play the retirement game once again to become a hated Viking.

Hope they don't make it to the Super Bowl. I don't want him to have the satisfaction.

"Favre put Green Bay on the map".
Get serious!
Get a clue!
The Packers have 12 championships and Favre only has one of them. Players like Canadeo, Hutson and Lambeau originally put Green bay on the map. Then when Lombardi, Starr (a real playoff quarterback), Nitschki, Gregg and the other greats from the 60s won five titles including three straight, that earned Green bay it's Title Town moniker. I think they are far more responsible for Green Bay being on the map than Farve.

You would have thought they had learned their lesson the first game. Blitz Brett, as he gets happy feet and makes throws that are easily picked off. Analertcitizen, I don't think Brent, oh meant Brett, put Green Bay Packers on the map, Vince Lombardi did, or was it Forrect Gregg, the coach, when he unzipped his zipper on his pants and made the playcall: 'Take out Dickey.' (meaning take out the former QB Lynn Dickey) I wouldn't have booed Brett either, shows no class from the rich who can be lucky enough to get season tickets handed to them for free or thru family generations. Most Packer fans who attend those games are either rich, spoiled, or just lucky enough to get tickets and should truly appreciate the game of football. Truth be told, I bet it was not 100% up to Brett to switch teams, but mgmt. and coaching played a much bigger part, so why BOO Brett when it was not entirely his fault, or even over 1/2 his fault probably. Gotta love watchin Brett! He's the best there ever was and is. Rodgers will get his time. He will be great too. But it was bitter sweet watchin Thompson squirm in his seat all by his lonesome self!!! I got a little sick of the boos. Have some respect! Boo Thompson, it was all his doing. Go Pack and Go Brett!?!?!?

I liked it when Brett covered one nostril and snot flew out the other right on camera. A little payback snot for the Packers. Good game and good comeback nonetheless by the Packers. Aaron Rodgers needs to learn to gun it sometimes and take chances and get it out of there sooner or they will never be a champion caliber team.

Go Cowboys!!

Sorry LJS, but the Favre saga helps a lot of us get our minds off things like the war and the economy etc.. All we see is negative things in the news each and every day. So, blogging and having fun with the Packers vs. Vikings/Favre saga is good humor for all.

I wish all of you would spend 1/2 the time you do on this Favre saga supporting and discussing the war in the middle east. Which is continuing to take the lives of our soldiers every day. Thanks to Bush for that mess he got us in and we will never get out of.

I look at it as a victory for all of us old folks. In addition, the inspirational Mike McCarthy is better suited to motivate a Pop Warner team. Poor Ted is safe, though - his boss is an even bigger dork than he is.

Go, Brett, go!!!! I am so happy for the guy. Badger4life: I was afraid that Fox Sports was never going to show us a shot of Thompson. Does that guy ever show any emotion? Look up the term "flat affect" in a psychology book and you'll find a photo of Thompson.

The camera shot of Ted Thompson in his box all by himself was priceless!
