A city woman who was bitten by a dog Friday said she has stopped getting rabies shots after the dog's owners stepped forward.

The woman said she was out walking last week when the dog bit her. She did not think at first that the dog had broken skin and only discovered it when she returned home.

The woman said Monday that the dog's owners have contacted police, and the dog now is quarantined. If the dog exhibits no signs of rabies, she won't need any more shots, the woman said.

That is- quarantined IN A VETERINARY FACILITY if it is not up to date on the vaccination.

The only way to test for rabies is to cut off the dog's head and test the brain tissue.
Routinely the dog is quarantined for 10 days at the owner's expense if it is not up to date on its vaccination. Even if a dog is up to date on its vaccination, it still must have 3 rabies checks by a veterinarian in the 10 day period following the bite.

As a person from the veterinary field, no matter if a dog is current on their vaccine or not, if a dog bites a person and it is reported, the dog is quarantined for 10 days. This means that it cannot be outside of the owners house for that time and it must have 3 visits to the veterinarian for an exam. This is just to ensure that the dog is exhibiting no signs of rabies and by 10 days if the dog did have rabies, it would begin to show those signs.
And just because the dog wasn't licensed by the city doesn' t automatically mean it isn't up to date on rabies. However, if the dog isn't up to date on the rabies vaccine then the quarantine is more extreme (i'm not sure the details on that one)Plus, not all clinics hand out rabies certificates to owners, but they should be on file!
By the way, most rabies vaccines are good for 3 years now including cats.

"The reason I would think all dog owners should is because they do go outside, poop, walks and could encounter people."

I disagree!! I am a dog owner, and I never poop outside, well, not in my backyard anyway.

I believe that it varies by individual town or maybe even county laws on quarantining an animal - even when it is up to date with its rabies vaccinations.

Aren't dog owners required by the local municipality to have current shots in order to obtain a license?? So this tells me that the dog wasn't current in shots and no license was obtained. (?)

The only way to be sure that the dog does not have rabies is to put it down.

Half the story.. hmm go figure.. :P
Sorry to hear she was bitten, glad owners came forward.
Story lacks details, obviously the dog didn't have current rabies shots or there would be no need to quarantine as far as I know?
When is the last the time a dog actually had rabies?? An actual real case of rabies, seriously, I'm curious?? Heard of bats years ago...but not any dogs?
