— It’s not where Katie Brossard has been, but where she is going.

Brossard, a Janesville Parker High School senior, signed an NCAA Division II national letter of intent Wednesday for a golf scholarship at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa.

Brossard helped lead Parker to the school’s first-ever WIAA state tournament berth this past season. She was a four-time all-conference selection and was on three Big Eight championship teams and one regional title team as a four-year varsity player.

Although she has been golfing since she was 8, Brossard has been playing competitive golf only since her freshman year at Parker.

“When Katie commits to something, she dives into it head first,” said Katie’s father, Ed, who taught her how to play golf.

Brossard sent letters to select college golf programs and attracted the attention of Upper Iowa coach Chad Markuson. Upper Iowa finished the 2009 fall season ranked 13th in the nation.

Markuson watched Brossard at the state meet in October at University Ridge and decided the Parker standout had potential to play Division II golf for the Peacocks.

Brossard played in tournaments last summer, and the experience has paid off.

“I have to work on hitting my irons farther,” Brossard said. “I have to improve my game.’’

Brossard said Parker coach John Zimmerman was instrumental in helping her grow into the game.

“When I started playing as a freshman, I just thought I’d play for the fun,” Brossard said. “Mr. Zimmerman helped me to improve. He was just great.’’
