JANESVILLE This year’s Spice on Ice figure skating show will feature a worldwide competitor.
“I don’t think Janesville has ever had a world competitor,” said Julie Kaveggia of the Janesville Figure Skating Club. “It’s nice to see somebody of this caliber here in Janesville.”
The nonprofit skating club and the Janesville Leisure Services Department on Saturday will host the fifth annual Spice on Ice figure skating show.
The featured performer is Aidas Reklys, an eight-time Lithuanian figure skating champion, seven-time world competitor and eight-time European competitor.
“We’re really excited. Aidas is a very exciting, dynamic skater,” said Mardel Wien, co-president of the figure skating club. “He’s just a very warm, personable and very fun individual.”
Other performers include sectional-ranked skaters, nationally ranked juniors, regional competitors and local club members.
The young children in the Polar Express Learn to Skate program also will be showcasing their talents.
“We have very high-level skaters all the way down to kids just starting out,” Wien said.
After the show, an open skate will be held. People can skate with Chilly Bear, the ice arena’s mascot, and other performers.
The holiday-themed show is a family friendly event, Kaveggia said, and it’s a way for the club to give back to the community.
“This is one way we can show our thanks and appreciation,” Wien said.
One performance will be dedicated to a National Guard unit, which includes local soldiers stationed overseas, Wien said. The performance will be recorded and sent to the soldiers.
“They won’t be able to be here for the holidays,” Wien said. “We just want them to know we’re thinking of them.”
The figure skating club also will collect nonperishable food items during the show. The food will be donated locally.

Lost-city...No, Janesville has a Figure Skating CLUB. And , why the anger directed at a bunch of pre-teen and teen-age girls who probably would be just as happy skating on the Traxler Park Lagoon?

We had a show every summer highlighting the skills of all the students in the school. I worked each event from 1977 to 1980.

Janesville has a figure skating team? How come we did not build them a new ice rink long ago, poor kids having to use that old one.

"I don’t think Janesville has ever had a world competitor,” said Julie Kaveggia of the Janesville Figure Skating Club. Did we forget the late 70s when there was a world-class figure skating program in Janesville with the Scotvolds. Theyn produced Olympians David Santee, Sandy Lenz and more.

I hope everyone comes out to enjoy the show the skaters have been working so hard to put on.
