— Lowell Sweet and John Maier Jr. of Sweet and Maier, Elkhorn, were selected for inclusion in the 2010 edition of “The Best Lawyers in America.” They also were named as Wisconsin Super Lawyers for the fourth consecutive year.

“They evaluate you on not only what you do in the practice of law, but also what you do beyond,” Sweet said. “Have you been an author of legal books? Have you been an educator? Do you teach seminars? What do you do for public, community-type situations?”

Sweet and Maier specializes in real estate, environmental, business, civil litigation, estate planning and probate law.

Sweet is named to the national list under real estate law, and Maier is listed under land use and zoning law. Sweet has practiced law in Walworth County since the late 1950s. Maier has practiced since the early 1970s.

“The Best Lawyers in America” is a peer-based list of the top attorneys in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. This year’s list honored about 39,766 of a list of 2.8 million evaluations, according officials at Aiken, S.C.,-based Best Lawyers.

The Super Lawyers list is a compilation of the top 5 percent of attorneys in each state. The annual guide is published by Law and Politics and published in Milwaukee Magazine’s December edition.

“I feel that I’m doing things the right way,” Sweet said. “If I wasn’t, I know my peers would be very blunt.

“Lawyers are very judgmental of each other, so if you’re not doing your job, they’re going to let you know and they’re going to let the world know.”
