— Thursday turned out to be a mixed day for Janesville Parker’s girls golf team.

Parker High advanced to the Mukwonago Sectional next Tuesday by finishing second in the rainy WIAA Division 1 regional hosted by Elkhorn at Evergreen Golf Course, but the Vikings came up four shots short in losing the regional championship to Milton.

The Red Hawks, led by medalist Ashton Stair, won the eight-team title with a 365 total. Parker followed with a 369, while Janesville Craig (395) and Lake Geneva Badger (405) also advanced to the sectional tournament at Rainbow Springs.

Elkhorn golfers Maggie Luchsinger, Rebecca Russell and Sammi Rogers also qualified for the sectional, along with Fort Atkinson’s Michelle Jacobson.

Parker coach John Zimmerman said the Vikings accomplished their No. 1 goal.

“Our first goal was to make it through to the sectional,” Zimmerman said. “Our second goal was to win the regional meet, but we came up just short.

“I told the girls afterward that, hopefully, we have our better day at the sectional meet. The conditions weren’t optimal today for playing golf, but they were the same for everybody.”

Katie Brossard had an 87 to pace the Vikings, while Sarah Sheldon’s 94 led Craig to a third-place finish.

Stair, a junior, had an 81 to easily win medalist honors. She played the last five holes 1-under after starting her back nine with a double bogey, bogey and quadruple bogey. Karlee McCue added a 90, while freshmen twins Laura and Stephanie Stair finished with 95 and 99, respectively.

“We just wanted to get the team through, winning was a bonus,” Milton coach Andrea Wieland said. “On a day like today with the weather the way it was, you need to focus shot by shot and not worry about what everyone else is doing.

“Now we can concentrate on the sectional meet. It’s a tough course, and the scores will be higher, but two teams make it through. Hopefully, we can give ourselves a chance.”
