Jets work overtime to slip past Blues
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. The Janesville Jets defeated the Springfield Blues, 5-4, in overtime to win the rubber match of the three-game series in North American Hockey League play Sunday.
The Jets' Rui Encarnarcao scored the winning goal 1 minute, 21 seconds into the OT with an assist from Mike Schenfeld.
Janesville native Ross Mauermann scored two of the Jets' four goals in the second period to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 4-3 lead.
Mauermann scored an unassisted shorthanded goal at 4:03 to tie the game, 2-2, but the Blues' bounced back with a goal at 6:10 to take a 3-2 lead.
Encarnarcao tied it 3-3 at 12:12 and Mauermann posted his second goal on a power play at 17:57 to give the Jets' a 4-3 lead. Springfield's Kevin O'Donnell tied it at 4:12 of the third period.
Jets' net minder Geoff Sadjadi posted 30 saves, while the Blues' C.J. Groh made 36 saves. Janesville had 41 shots on goal to Springfield's 34.
Janesville, members of the North Division, improve to
4-6. Springfield is 4-4-1 in the South Division.
The Jets will host the Blues at 7 p.m. Friday at the Janesville Ice Skating Center.
