— Janesville Craig High School’s boys soccer team started strongly, but Madison East was the better finisher on Monday to win, 3-2, in overtime.

The Big Eight Conference matchup was a makeup game from Oct. 1.

Babacar Kone scored two goals for the Purgolders, including the tying score in the 66th minute.

Ben Shiners’ goal with three minutes left in ovetime won it for East.

“We didn’t quite clear the ball, and they kind of crashed the side of the goal, and he poked it into the net,” Craig coach Charles Friedrich said of Shiner.

“Madison East is a quality team. I really liked the way the kids stepped up.”

Odain White and Cody Hedgecock scored first-half goals for the Cougars, who finished the regular season at

7-11-1 and 2-7 in the Big Eight.

“This team has had its ups and downs all year, but at home they’ve played every single game strong,” Friedrich said.

The Craig coach also praised the play of sophomore goalie Peter Cooney, who turned away 16 shots. Due to injuries, Cooney is the third goalie to play for Craig this season.

“He made some crucial saves on some quality shots,” Friedrich said.
