WCLO's Steve Benton reports Rock County officials are upset over a new phone tax that appears to come from the county

RSS

— Rock County officials are upset over a new state imposed tax showing up on local phone bills.

Assistant County Administrator, Phil Boutwell, says the "surcharge" appears to be a County imposed tax listed as benefiting the Rock County 911 system. The $.75 fee is affective on all land lines and cell phones, and actually goes to help fill the state's budget deficit, according to Boutwell.

County Board Chair, Russ Podzilni, says "We are offended by the insinuation that the fee was imposed by Rock County."

Boutwell says he's sent a letter to the Chair of the Wisconsin Public Service Commission, Eric Callisto, asking the "inaccurate and misleading" wording be changed.
