The kicking game proved crucial Friday night as Sun Prairie High School’s football team turned the Big Eight race into a free-for-all.

With a 14-13 victory at Verona, the Cardinals lifted themselves into a tie with the Wildcats and three other teams for first place with one game to go. Janesville Parker, Madison Memorial and Middleton joined the crowd at 6-2.

Sun Prairie and Verona each scored two touchdowns, but a missed extra point after Verona’s second score was the difference.

The Wildcats also had a chance to win it with a late field goal, but Cameron Bathe’s 26-yard attempt with 40 seconds sailed wide right.

Sun Prairie scored first when junior Mike Mwelwa ran seven yards for a second-quarter touchdown. Mwelwa finished with 126 yards on 23 carries.

Verona’s Danny Burns scored on a 65-yard run to help the Wildcats gain a 7-7 halftime tie.

Bathe then put Verona ahead 13-7 in the third quarter with a 20-yard scoring run.

The Cardinals scored the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter on a 38-yard pass from Tyler Patterson to Jordan Noskowiak. Jordan Noble converted the kick for the winning point.

Mwelwa finished with 23 carfries for 126 yards. Sun Prairie played without running back Sean Marshall, who has left the team.
