— A UW-Whitewater student has started a support group for parents of children with autism and other disabilities.

The group held its first meeting last week and is looking for more members, said Carrie Braunreiter.

The group meets at 1 p.m. Thursdays at Catholic Charities, 2020 E Milwaukee St., Suite 9.

Braunreiter got the idea from her work with The Wisconsin Early Autism Project, doing in-home therapy, which opened her eyes to the many issues parents deal with, she said.

"This group will be a process group, with the focus being on the experiences of parents/caretakers in raising a child with special needs," she said.

Braunreiter is working on a degree in counseling education and is starting the group as a class project, but the Janesville resident said she will continue it after the course ends.

For more information, contact Braunreiter at BraunreiCL11@uww.edu or (608) 289-4750.
