— A woman was flown by helicopter to a hospital and Highway 14 was shut down for two hours following an accident Tuesday in Union Township.

The two-vehicle accident happened at 4:42 p.m. on Highway 14 north of Holt Road, according to a news release from the Rock County Sheriff's Office. A car driven by Beauford Udell, 84, Beloit, failed to negotiate a slight curve and struck an oncoming SUV driven by Mary Flaherty, 51, Evansville.

The SUV rolled several times, landing on its passenger side on the highway, the release says. Flaherty had to be extricated from the vehicle and was flown to University Hospital, Madison, with "incapacitating injuries."

She had not yet been admitted to the hospital as of press time, a spokeswoman there said.

Udell's car remained upright, and he was able to steer it onto the shoulder, the release says.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts. Alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash, the release says.
