Janesville Jets win exhibition game
DUBUQUE, IOWA Coach Dane Litke thought his Janesville Jets hockey team was in for a rough night here Wednesday, but the host Dubuque Thunderbirds did not live up to the coach’s expectations.
The Jets rolled to an easy 8-1 victory, making it two straight exhibition wins over the CSHL powerhouse. Janesville defeated the Thunderbirds, 5-3, to open their inaugural season last Saturday at the Janesville Ice Skating Center.
“I didn’t think Dubuque played very well,” Litke said. “I thought they’d come out with more fire.’’
Thunderbirds’ coach Joe Coombs stood up at a Tuesday media-day press conference in Dubuque and confidently said his Thunderbirds would win their fourth straight Hurster Cup.
The Jets took a 2-0 first-period lead, and added four goals in the second period for an eye-popping 6-0 lead.
Tommy Paine scored two goals to lead the Jets, while Janesville’s Ross Mauermann scored a goal in the second period.
With two victories over a team expecting to go places, Litke can only hope it’s a sign of good things to come.
“I sure hope so,” Litke said. “We have a few areas we need to work on, but hopefully we are ready to play.’’
Janesville opens its NAHL season at home against Traverse City, Mich., at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
