The Janesville City Council could soon have to decide how much value they place on preserving historic--but dilapidated--houses in the city's Fourth Ward neighborhood.

The council approved the purchase of three foreclosed homes in the neighborhood Monday night. Two of the homes could be renovated and are listed as contributing structures to the neighborhood in the National Register of Historic Places. However, the city hasn't seen the interior of the homes. If the interiors are in poor condition, the city council could decide not to spend money for the renovations and pay for demolition instead. The third structure, on Pearl Street, will be demolished.

City staff members will report back to the council if renovations on the two historic homes aren't financially feasible.
