— A Delavan man accused of causing bruises to his 4-month-old baby’s face could go to prison for six years on a felony charge of physical abuse of a child.

Jeremiah J. Stillwell, 22, of 511 Autumn Drive, No. 202, is scheduled to next appear in Walworth County Court on May 10. The court has entered a not guilty plea for Stillwell.

According to the criminal complaint:

The baby’s mother told investigators March 19 she had gone to get food from a restaurant. When she returned, Stillwell asked her to look at the infant’s face.

The two thought the child might have been having an allergic reaction. They took the baby to the emergency room at Aurora Lakeland Medical Center in Elkhorn.

The hospital made a report of child abuse to the Delavan Police Department and Walworth County Department of Human Services.

Investigators saw several bruises on the baby’s face.

The mother denied hurting her child.

Stillwell initially denied knowing how the infant got hurt. He then admitted that he caused the bruises because he got frustrated when the baby was crying.

Stillwell admitted he took his hand and covered and squeezed the child’s face while she was in her crib. He said he wanted to stop her from crying.

Stillwell was arrested and ordered held in the Walworth County Jail on $20,000 cash bond.

At least that's what I'm hoping for now.

you don't have to worry about that, he will not even get supervised visits. i'm the child's mother and i left him immediately and i'm hoping to get his rights taken away. after what he did, he should have gotten far more than what he did, only three years prison, three years supervised probation.

I hope the Mother of this child has the maturity to leave this worthless human being. As a parent, your first priority is to protect your child. This guy should never be alone with the child either, supervised visits only I don't care how old the child is. Delavan is a small town, he will never be treated the same again and that's a good thing. His family must be so proud.

“a child shouldn't be having a child” He is 22 years old, he is NOT a child!!!! He is an adult and needs to start acting like an adult, take responsibility for his actions plead guilty to what he did and then stay away from this child because he has already proven that he does not have the patients to be a parent. Once again he is NOT a child!!!!

Disgusting! Anyone who abuses innocent and helpless babies, children, elderly and animals should receive a mandatory sentence of experiencing the same abuse that was inflicted!!!

I highly doubt whether being a few years older would help this guy any. At 22 he is certainly "old" enough to be a proper parent. Being a younger parent is absolutely NO excuse. Do you honestly think that if this same child abuser were say 27 that he would not do this to a child if he got angry or frustrated? Lame...really lame. He's a loser who does not deserve kids-at any age.

I love it when these "I'm-a-big-man-types" get arrested for something insane like this and then come to court and go mute. Come on, big "man", speak up!

I agree, a child shouldn't be having a child, but they are protected, even those that do it for the welfare money.

It's quite frustrated for those that can't have kids, by nature, but these fools can pop'em out like water.

Everyone needs a license to drive, but anyone can have a child. I agree he should be sterilized and thrown in jail for many years. There should be no tolerance rules when it comes to abusing children! Our justice system is really f'd up!

This is why children shouldn't be having children.

He'll get six months? You're dreaming.
The Beloit woman who abused her three year old to the point of having part of her skull removed got a whopping 2 years PROBATION.
A bruise on the face will get pleaded down to a guilty misdemeanor of disorderly conduct. It won;t even get a conviction of child abuse, so he will be clear to adopt children or work in daycares in the future.

Obviously he crossed a line and must and will be punished, but this simply underscores the importance of parenting classes, especially for very young parents. This is a common pattern where the father who normally does not participate as much in parenting is left alone with the child and his skills are taxed to the breaking point, because he had no preparation for how difficult it can be.

I'm always stunned by the enormous level of selfishness it takes to think it would be okay, for any reason, to harm a child. His sentence should include a vasectomy and the prohibition of even owning a pet. Mr. Stillwell is too self-centered to be a parent figure for any living being.

I fail to see how the punishment fits the crime. That poor little girl did nothing wrong and the most he can get is 6 years. That is not protecting the child at all!!!

The Enterprise has a picture of the baby's face right on the front page, there is no way that any parent could believe that the baby had an allergic reaction to something. This is sickening and people like this jerk should not be able to reproduce.
