WCLO's Steve Benton reports on a local farmer who says he practices "green" farming every day, not just on Earth Day

RSS

— Earth Day is April 22, but to many farmers, Earth Days is every day of the year.

Austin Arndt, is a 3rd generation beef producer in Rock County. He says his grandfather told him to "take care of the land and the land will take care of you."

Arndt says he practices environmental sustainability in a number of ways including soil testing, which helps him keep the soil in the best condition for the various crops he plants. He also uses manure produced by the cattle to reduce the amount of synthetic fertilizer used.

Arndt farms 3,000 acres south of Janesville and ships about 1,800 steers to market each year.

According to a national survey of beef eaters, cattle farmers and ranchers were selected as the 3rd greenest profession from a diverse list of jobs. Number one on the list is park ranger.
