A suspect in a shooting near the south side of Delavan Lake Thursday is loaded into an ambulance at the end of Ravenswood Drive in Delavan Township near where he was apprehended.

— A man was in surgery in critical condition Thursday night and two men were in custody after they fled from the scene of a shooting Thursday afternoon on the south side of Delavan Lake.

The incident remained under investigation, and no charges had been filed Thursday night, Walworth County Sheriff David Graves said.

Witnesses reported a shooting at 3:46 p.m. at the intersection of Bennett Street and South Shore Drive in Delavan Township west of the city of Delavan, Graves said. The shooting took place on the street, he said.

The suspects fled on foot around the lake’s west end, Graves said. One of them walked out of the woods and was taken into custody at 4:27 p.m. near Viewcrest Drive, he said.

Deputies tracked the second man to Ravenswood subdivision, where police found the man at 5:26 p.m. hiding in a summer home, he said.

Good descriptions of the suspects and the directions in which they fled helped deputies locate the suspects quickly, Graves said. Search dogs, a boat and a helicopter were used to track the men.

“He took off running in a certain direction,” Graves said of the second suspect. “The dogs were pretty close on him.”

The initial investigation showed the victim was shot in the back, Graves said. He was transported to Mercy Hospital in Janesville, where he was in surgery Thursday night, he said.

One of the suspects complained of breathing problems and was checked by emergency personnel, Graves said. He was returned to police custody.

Both suspects are in custody at the Walworth County Jail.

Asked if the weapon or weapons had been found, Graves said only that the investigation was continuing.

What do mean get a education? How many people in Delavan have one now? That town was a great town to come and have visit and shop. That's right if cops in Delavan would have to start asking for that ( green card) then it would be work. They would rather sit on 43 and give tickets, than make sure people are safe on the streets. Just look at the home values in Delavan that is another thing that will tell you. One proud GOP sorry you are Demoset

Would like to know more of the details. Was it drugs? Did the guy who got shot have something to do with it? Not saying he deserved to be shot, but it might turn out that we got three criminals off the street.

I see a black man in the picture, not a hispanic. One from Janesville and one from Darien. How did that become an argument about imigration?

Think you have your politics wrong Big Daddy-Republicans are too busy having us pay there way and padding their retirement. I'm a Democrat and would love all the illegals out of this area. I pray for immigration to come through and truck them all back to Mexico.

i think everyone needs to understand that these things happen in towns everywhere...you can say "things like this don't happen in towns like this" you can say "delavan is getting unsafe", but the thing is, it's not the towns that are getting unsafe, it's the parents who aren't caring what their kids do and not teaching them right from wrong. I've grown up in delavan and i'm doing just fine.

One thing that town needs to do, is check for Green cards. I bet 25% of that town will be gone then. But thanks to the Dems. we can't do that.

Its about time that Town thinks about what should be done about all these issues. Delavan is not a safe town any more. Drugs and gangs are taking over.
